Heather Morse joins Greentree

MONKTON — Greentree Real Estate in Monkton welcomes Heather Morse as its seventh licensed real estate agent. Morse joined Greentree in April 2016 and has been a licensed Realtor since 2013.

Morse, a native Vermonter from New Haven, recently purchased her first home with her husband, Greg, in Charlotte. She graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2013 with a degree in architecture.

Bristol business park hinges on water bond vote

BRISTOL — The vote next Tuesday, May 10, on the $1.1 million water bond could be a crucial step in Bristol’s 20-year quest to build a business park with the capacity not only to incubate but to retain and grow businesses.

“People in Bristol are really passionate about Bristol,” said planning commission member John Elder. “I think a lot of people are devoted to this town but it needs the shot in the arm that would come with allowing successful businesses to grow. Everybody’s agreed about that for a quarter century.”

MUHS's Beauchamp wins coveted Gates scholarship

MIDDLEBURY — Some people become defined by tragedy and are unable to overcome it.

But Nick Beauchamp continues to draw inspiration from the worst night of his life — Sept. 10, 2005. That’s when his dad died in a car crash in New Jersey.

Beauchamp was only 6 years old at the time, but the events will forever be etched in his memory.

“My whole family huddled in the living room, torrents of tears sweeping through the room,” he wrote in an essay about that soul-draining day.

Hiroshima survivor and Truman heir share stage at Mead Chapel

MIDDLEBURY — Shigeko Sasamori remembers looking up at the blue sky over Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945, and watching an airplane soaring overhead.

“It looked so beautiful,” Sasamori told a crowd of over 400 gathered at Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel on Monday evening. “I saw the airplane drop something white ... and when the white thing dropped it pushed me down.”

Tiger team takes fifth at national 'Quiz Bowl'

MIDDLEBURY — It’s quite common for Scholars’ Bowl competitions to feature history questions for teams of inquisitive public high school students.

After this past weekend, the Middlebury Union High School team could itself become the answer to a history question at some future Scholars’ Bowl tournament.

MIDDLEBURY — Chuck Miller, then a young graduate of the Berklee College of Music, found his professional life at a crossroads in 1968 — one of the most tumultuous years in this nation’s history. Assassins had taken the lives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy. The U.S. was escalating its military involvement in an increasingly unpopular war in Vietnam.

Miller could have plunged into composing, performing or teaching.

Global events helped him make his decision.

City police honored at annual ceremony

VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel at the April 26 city council meeting praised his department’s work over the past year at its annual awards ceremony while singling out two members for honors and also recognizing one citizen and the city’s public works department.

Merkel presented a pin to Detective Sgt. Jason Ouellette for what he called “outstanding narcotics investigation” efforts.

Kelly Boe bike ride called off

MIDDLEBURY — The second annual “Kelly Boe Memorial Bike Ride” slated for Monday, May 2, has been called off because of rainy weather.

The event, organized by Middlebury Safe Routes, raises money for a scholarship fund in honor of Boe, a Middlebury resident who was killed after being struck by a car while cycling in Weybridge on April 14, 2015.

Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor to speak at college

MIDDLEBURY — On Monday, May 2, a survivor of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima, Japan, and the grandson of the man who ordered the attack will appear together at a talk at Middlebury College.

Shigeko Sasamori, a Hiroshima survivor and a Hiroshima Maiden, and Clifton Daniel, grandson of President Harry Truman, will discuss the moral and political consequences of the events that ended World War II. 

The event, called “Responsibility, Reconciliation, and the Dropping of the Atomic Bombs,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Mead Chapel.

Expo seeks sustainability demonstrations

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Energy Committee will be presenting the 2016 Sustainability Expo on Saturday, May 14, at Middlebury Union Middle School from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Sustainability Expo builds on the success of the previous 2015 Sustainable Living Expo, which was attended by over 500 residents and local businesspeople.
