Whiting to host a preschool; older kids moving out

WHITING — Beginning in September, Whiting Elementary School will house a district-wide prekindergarten program for the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union (RNeSU), as well as a full-time private childcare center.

RNeSU Superintendent Jeanne Collins said that the Otter Valley Unified Union (OVUU) School Board sought a public-private partnership to address concerns from parents who were unable to send a child to pre-K because they also needed full-time childcare.

Whiting town meeting wrap-up 2018

WHITING — Thirty-six residents at the Whiting town meeting on Tuesday evening at town hall were kind to the incumbent town officials and to town roads.

Those gathered at Whiting Town Hall on Tuesday evening added $10,000 to the highway budget in order to do a little more in repair dirt roads in town. That made the final municipal spending plan that was approved by voters $338,962.50 of spending for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, with $243,689.10 to be raised by taxes.

Whiting gun dispute unresolved as daily fines pile up

WHITING — Months after the Whiting Zoning Board of Adjustment upheld a Zoning Notice of Violation to Stickney Road resident Nicolas Iocco for operating an unpermitted commercial shooting range and for violating noise and safety provisions, Iocco and town officials remain at a standoff on his payment of $400 of daily fines that have piled up since May.

Merger of Whiting, Leicester Sudbury schools put to vote

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Unified Union School Board has approved a proposed 2018-19 school budget that would combine the district’s three small schools — Leicester Central, Whiting Elementary and Sudbury Country schools — and move the Caverly Preschool to Lothrop Elementary in Pittsford.

The proposed $19,223,835 spending plan, approved at a Jan. 10 meeting, represents a roughly $550,000 cut in spending, or 1.22 percent, from the current budget.

Top 10, No. 10: Gun regulations draw fire

Two county communities hosted at times heated debates this year about where lines should be drawn between the right to shoot firearms and the right to neighborhood peace and safety.

The situations and the results varied.

In Whiting neighbors of a gun range that town officials said was illegal complained about noise and safety. About two dozen showed up at a zoning board hearing in July to oppose ongoing shooting at a Stickney Road range. The owner, Nicolas Iocco, said he no longer runs the range as a business, although he would accept donations.

Lothrop-Neshobe merger panned: OVUSD explores options to address $1.6 million shortfall

BRANDON — If a vote on whether to merge Lothrop and Neshobe elementary schools were conducted at the gym where a recent public forum was held, the result would likely be a resounding “No.”

The idea, which would send kindergarten through third-grade students to one school and fourth- through sixth-graders to the other, is one of two “Big Ideas” that were discussed at two public meetings in the Otter Valley Unified School District in the last week.

County game warden Gaiotti featured in latest 'Vermont Wild' book

MIDDLEBURY — A caricature of the late game warden Denny Gaiotti and his story of a defiant skunk grace the cover of the newly released “Vermont Wild, Adventures of Fish & Game Wardens, Volume 5.”

A Whiting resident and game warden for 39 years, the cover art pays homage to the legendary law enforcement officer affectionately called “Bigfoot” by Addison County outdoorsmen. Looking for Gaiotti’s size-14 boot tracks was one way hunters would attempt to ascertain if the big lawman was nearby.

Gun range dispute in Whiting intensifies

WHITING — Tempers were high at the Whiting Town Hall last Wednesday, Aug. 2, as those involved in a zoning hearing over the legality of a gun shooting range argued the facts of the case and even questioned the veracity of a video of the previous hearing.

At issue was a shooting range operated by Nicolas Iocco on his property at 299 Stickney Road.
