Shoreham to decide on solar array buy-in; special town meeting set

SHOREHAM — Shoreham residents on Oct. 23 will be asked to invest in solar energy to help power — at a bargain — their town-owned buildings.

The Shoreham selectboard last month voted unanimously to hold a special town meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at which residents will asked to be spend up to $55,351 for as many as 94 solar panels at a 150-kW solar array on an acre at 869 Watch Point Road in Shoreham.

Shoreham Historical Society to meet Oct. 3

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham Historical Society will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Platt Memorial Library at 7 p.m. The speakers will be three members of the Green Mountain Boys Project, who are responsible for the clean up that has been done in the Callendar Cemetery.

They are a group of historians who are attempting to do biographies on all of the original Green Mountain Boys. They plan to prepare a report for each town that the Boys hailed from including information on the men, where they lived, where they are buried, etc.

Driver killed in crash with Cornwall fire truck on Route 125

CORNWALL — Area residents were voicing shock Monday morning in the wake of Sunday afternoon’s frightful collision between a pickup truck and Cornwall Fire Department utility vehicle on Route 125 that took the life of 44-year-old Deane Rubright of Shoreham.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the accident has left Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department members shaken and temporarily without a utility vehicle, which was used to carry all the force’s equipment to the many fire and accident scenes it responds to each year.

Shoreham apple fest offers fruit, music and pig kissing

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham Apple Fest on Sunday, Sept. 16, will mark its 10th year of uniting people for a day of music, food, festivities, recreation and even a shameless display of pig smooching. It all aims to raise funds for the community’s Platt Memorial Library.

Apple Fest kicks off with a run; music, lunch to follow

SHOREHAM — The 10th annual Apple Fest will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Shoreham town green and gazebo. The day kicks off with a 5 and 10K run at 10:30. Activities and live music with Snake Mountain Bluegrass begin at noon. Lunch, made and served by the Friends of the Library, will include pulled pork sandwiches with sides of cole slaw, baked beans or mac’n cheese.

Business profile: Vermont Refrigerated Storage

SHOREHAM — It takes a whole lot of chemistry to be able to eat an apple in July. Vermont Refrigerated Storage, or VRS, on Route 22A in Shoreham has keeping apples fresh for extended periods down to a science. 

With a series of temperature-controlled rooms, each with specific levels of oxygen and nitrogen, co-owner Barney Hodges is able to ensure that clients like Champlain Orchards can keep their fruit fresh throughout the winter and spring, and into the summer months.

Japan honors Shoreham man for efforts to improve cultural understanding

Clock winders keep towns ticking

ADDISON COUNTY — Each Tuesday morning just before 9 a.m., Dick Thodal arrives at the Congregational Church of Middlebury, walks upstairs to the main prayer area, and continues on even further up a narrow, white staircase, tucked to the left of the organ pipes. Clad in his red suspenders, he climbs the old wooden steps inside the steeple until he reaches the boxy room where the town clock ticks along.

Shoreham youth reported missing, but then found

SHOREHAM — Vermont State Police called off a search for an 11-year-old boy who reportedly ran away from his Shoreham home Monday evening, after the youngster returned home on his own.

Early this morning troopers reported that Kayden Torrey went missing from at 391 Torrey Lane in Shoreham at around 5 p.m. on Monday, July 16.

Shoreham solar project ready to move forward

MIDDLEBURY — A local, community–owned solar photovoltaic project, under development by the Acorn Renewable Energy Co-op of Middlebury since 2015, is moving forward again.

The proposed project, Acorn Energy Solar 2 (AES2), is a 150 kW solar array occupying just over 1 acre of land at 869 Watch Point Road in Shoreham. Consisting of 612 solar panels rated at 340 Watts each, the group net metered project is expected to generate about 249,000 kW annually, enough electricity to power about 30 to 40 homes.
