Robot blurs biological boundaries

LINCOLN — In the hills of Lincoln exists a robot with a face that moves, eyes that see, ears that hear and a digital mind that enables conversation.

Her name is Bina48.

The unassuming android with a brown wig and pearls has been gaining notoriety since her inception several years ago. But as her creators seek to blur the boundaries between human consciousness and machines, fame isn't their primary motive.

What’s it like to interview a robot?

I recently got the chance to talk with Bina48, often touted as the world’s most advanced android, or human-like robot. Bina48 currently resides in Lincoln under the care of the Terasem Movement Foundation — a nonprofit dedicated to testing whether a person’s consciousness can be replicated in another biological or technological form.

Season's greeting shines again

LINCOLN — Heading up the road from Bristol along the New Haven River, just west of the mountain village of Lincoln, stands a small Christmas tree in the woods decorated with lights and a star.

The mysterious tree — situated in a thick patch of forest, across the river from homes and utility lines — shines anomalously against tall stands of trees in the dark, winter night.

Lincoln looks into solar project

LINCOLN — The town of Lincoln last week drew one step closer to funding a 60-kilowatt solar installation with taxpayer dollars.

On Monday, Oct. 24, the selectboard and about 40 residents gathered at Lincoln’s Burnham Hall to discuss a proposal with the Williston-based company AllEarth Renewables.

What did they think?

“Among those assembled, there was unanimous support for the project,” said town moderator Will Sipsey.

LINCOLN — Fifth- and sixth-graders from Lincoln Community School had to leave their classrooms last week when the two rooms closed for renovations. But the town of Lincoln hasn’t left its youngsters without a place to learn.

Lincoln digs in river for materials to repair roads

LINCOLN — Lincoln officials removed rocks from the New Haven River last week without state authorization in order to get materials to shore up roads undermined by flooding after Tropical Storm Irene.

Town officials said they had been trying to get a hold of state officials for four weeks without success, and they moved ahead with the work so that necessary repairs could be finished before snow flies.

LINCOLN — Lincoln’s Nate Gusakov has created a new kind of CSA. No, not a community supported agriculture farm, but rather a community supported album.

Born from the talents of local musicians and propelled by his community’s financial support, the 31-year-old banjo-playing singer-songwriter just released his debut solo album called “Running Clear.”

Rep. Fisher tapped to lead health panel

LINCOLN — Speaker Shap Smith on Thursday announced the appointment of Rep. Michael Fisher, D-Lincoln, as the chair of the House Committee on Health Care. Rep. Fisher, the current vice chair of the committee, replaces former Rep. Mark Larson who resigned from the Legislature in August to become the Commissioner of the Department of Vermont Health Access. Rep. Sarah Copeland-Hanzas, D-Bradford, will become the committee’s vice chair.
