Middlebury Police Log: Police have busy, routine week

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Caleb Burkle, 30, of Salisbury for driving under the influence, third offense, following a stop on Court Street Extension on Jan. 19.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted an individual on Merchants Row who was receiving annoying phone solicitations on Jan. 14.

•  Responded to a report of a drunken person in the Little Pond Road area on Jan. 14. The person was turned over to a sober friend, police said.

Vermont State Police Log: N.Y. man runs car off the road twice in one night

ADDISON COUNTY — Thursday, Jan. 10, was a bad night for a 23-year-old man from Elizabethtown, N.Y., when it came to driving on Addison County roads.

At a few minutes after 8 p.m. that evening Vermont State Police responded to a one-car crash on Route 125 in Cornwall. Trooper Timothy Hanley reported that the driver, Nickolas Mahler, told him that he swerved to miss a deer, and, in doing so, drove his 2011 Chevy Impala off Route 125 and into a small grove of trees. The accident resulted in front-end damage to the vehicle, but no one was injured.

Vergennes Police Log: Man fails New Year's Even sobriety checkpoint

VERGENNES — Vergennes police joined four other law enforcement agencies at a Route 7 New Year’s Eve sobriety checkpoint near the Ferrisburgh fire station, at which one driver was cited for drunken driving, among other things.

After stopping him at the checkpoint, police cited Fred Winrock, 39, of Essex Junction for driving under the influence of alcohol, fourth offense; possession of marijuana and narcotic drugs; and driving with a suspended license.
