Vergennes: Police dealt with a variety of crime

VERGENNES — In an otherwise mostly quiet week between July 30 and Aug. 5, Vergennes police dealt with cases of alleged threats, citizens feeling suicidal, and unwanted nude pictures.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

On July 30:

• Heard from a Short Street resident that her boyfriend had threatened her and was also possibly feeling suicidal. City police could not immediately find the man, but Vermont State Police later did and took him to Porter Hospital for counseling.

Middlebury: Police help man who felt threatened

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Police assisted a local man who on Aug. 3 claimed he had been threatened by another man in the Maple Street area on Aug. 3. Police are investigating the incident.

In other action last week, Middlebury Police:

• Investigated a report of a man exhibiting some “unwanted, inappropriate behavior” toward a woman working at the Inn on the Green on South Pleasant Street on July 30. Police said they’re trying to identify the man and will then serve him with a no-trespass order.

Man cited for sex assaults on unconscious relative

NORTH FERRISBURGH — A New York man pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison County Superior Court’s criminal division to two felony counts of sexual assault, stemming from allegations he had non-consensual sex with an extended family member on two separate occasions while she was in a deep sleep while recovering from seizures.

Aaron Candido, 34, of St. Johnsonville, N.Y., faces a prison term of three years to life, as well as a fine of up to $25,000, on each of the two sex assault charges, if convicted.

Man jailed after kidnapping, lewdness arrest

MIDDLEBURY —  Middlebury police on Wednesday, Aug. 1, cited 51-year-old Lyle N. Birchard of Salisbury on counts of kidnapping and lewd and lascivious conduct, stemming from a recent investigation into alleged incidents at two residences on South Pleasant Street in Middlebury.

In a brief press release issued late Wednesday afternoon, Middlebury Police Det. Kris Bowdish said the alleged kidnap victim was an “elderly, vulnerable” woman, and she identified the second victim is “an elderly woman.”

Vermont State Police Log: Domestic disputes lead to assault charges

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded to two recent domestic disputes over the past two weeks, both resulting in assault charges.

The first occurred on July 21 in Orwell, at around 6:21 p.m., after troopers received a report of a family fight. After arriving at the scene, troopers determined that Amber Thomas, 22, of Orwell had physically assaulted a family member, before damaging two vehicles, smashing the home’s windows with a shovel, and driving away.

Middlebury Police Log: Resident submits sexual assault kit

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police picked up an anonymously submitted sexual assault tracking kit from an East Main Street residence on July 26.

Police said the kit has been place into evidence and the matter is under investigation.

In recent action, Middlebury police:

•  Referred a local woman to mental health services on July 16 after she alleged hearing multiple gunshots and reported multiple people had tried to get into her Court Street apartment.

Vergennes Police Log: After thefts, city police urge vigilance

VERGENNES — After three bicycles were stolen from Vergennes homes between July 25 and 29, a rash of thefts that followed a series of earlier car break-ins throughout the city, Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel is again asking residents to be careful about property security.

Merkel earlier this week urged residents to lock their cars, homes and garages, especially at night, and also asked anyone who sees anything suspicious to call Vergennes police at 877-1152.

Vermont State Police Log: Man cited for DUI, illegal firearm

ADDISON COUNTY— This past Friday evening at around 6 p.m. Vermont State Police saw a motor vehicle violation and stopped the car on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh. While Troopers spoke with the driver, identified as 30-year-old Justin Gaboriault of West Rutland, police detected signs of impairment. After Gaboriault performed standard filed sobriety tests, troopers arrested him on suspicion that he was driving under the influence.

Bristol Police Log: Man cited for assault, burglary

BRISTOL — On July 6 Bristol police arrested Yohanan Svitavsky, 30, of Bristol, for burglary, assault, obstruction of justice and reckless endangerment.

Through investigation police said they determined that Svitavsky and another person entered the dwelling of an acquaintance and assaulted the occupant.

Svitavsky was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Center, arraigned July 9 and held without bail.

The incident remains under investigation.

Vergennes Police Log: Officers persuade naked man with bike to get dressed

VERGENNES — Late this past Saturday Vergennes police dealt with a man who they said admitted drinking too much and was arguably wearing too little: He was naked when they first encountered him outside a First Street home.

City police responded to a call late on Saturday saying there was a naked man with a bicycle on Panton Road. When they arrived they found the man unclothed in a First Street yard. He then, police said, went onto the home’s porch and put on a pair of shoes.
