Mount Abe Teen Log: School's Kindness Campaign educates against bullying

BRISTOL — A group of middle school students has volunteered to serve as Greatness Reps at Mount Abraham Union High School, and will be leading a Kindness Campaign throughout the year with a goal of ultimately ending bullying.

Bristol votes yes on town plan

BRISTOL — The proposed new Bristol town plan passed with a decisive 68.7 percent of the vote on Tuesday, ending an eight-year process that at times seemed to divide the town on issues of zoning proposals and resource extraction.

“In all honesty, I’m ecstatic,” said Kris Perlee of the Bristol Planning Commission. “A lot of work was done by a lot of people to make a plan that reflects the desires of the town as a whole.”

After gravel compromise, Bristol plan goes to vote

BRISTOL — After eight years of debate, discussion and discord, the Bristol Town Plan will be on the ballot and back in the voters’ hands on Election Day, Nov. 6. The Bristol Planning Commission and the Bristol selectboard, which added 42 changes to the draft given to them by the planning commission based on input from public hearings, unanimously approved the latest version.

Bristol downtown returning to health

BRISTOL — Just a few years after a recession-induced slump prompted the closure of several Main Street businesses, downtown Bristol is making a comeback.

This summer marked the opening of Lulu’s ice cream shop by the owners of Mary’s Restaurant, Danielle Smith’s Little Babycakes baby clothing store, and Rory Jackson’s painting studio and gallery space.

Bigger Bristol police district eyed

BRISTOL — The Police Advisory Board plans to take a first step to gauge public support for expanding the police district beyond the village limits to include the entire town of Bristol.

The board this week announced it will conduct a survey of Bristol residents outside of Holley Hall on Election Day.

Heffernan gets 33 months in jail of gun crime

BRISTOL — A Bristol man who was originally charged with attempted murder in a 2011 shooting incident that apparently revolved around a heroin deal gone bad, has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and been sentenced to nearly three years in jail.

Dean C. Heffernan, 28, of Bristol was sentenced late last week in U.S. District Court in Rutland to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Bristol landmark ‘The Pillars’ to be moved to upstate New York

BRISTOL A town landmark, the Greek Revival style building on Route 116 known as “The Pillars,” is leaving Bristol for good.

Although some who have driven past the home recently have speculated that the building is being renovated, the opposite is actually true.

“It’s being deconstructed,” explained Diane Saunders, the Bristol resident who lives in another home on the property where the historic building currently stands and who used to own The Pillars with her husband, Alan.

Third Bristol crime forum set for Oct. 17 at MAUHS

BRISTOL — Bristol will hold its third crime forum at Mount Abraham Union High School this Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 7-9 p.m. While the last two forums, in July and September, focused on providing information to the community, the goal of the third forum is to hone in on potential steps forward. A steering committee has been formed, and met last week to plan the agenda.
