ADDISON COUNTY — Mental health care professionals around the state say Vermont’s mental health system is overburdened, and that too often the mentally ill end up in the state corrections system.
Nearly half of all inmates at Vermont prisons seek mental health treatment, making the Department of Corrections likely the largest mental health care provider in the state.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Travis Forbes resigned suddenly and unexpectedly Tuesday night, citing mounting personal and professional time commitments and frustration over what he indicated was his inability to influence operations at the Middlebury Department of Public Works.
Forbes, 35, was first elected to the selectboard in 2010 in a successful write-in campaign, and won re-election in 2013. He and his family run Case Street Redi-Mix Inc.

SALISBURY — The Dyer family plot in the West Salisbury Cemetery hosts a simple headstone in memory of Bobby Dyer, the prodigal son who left small-town life and his own budding motorcycle business more than six decades ago to serve his country during the Korean War.
WEYBRIDGE/WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Monday evening as local writer Julia Alvarez sat chatting with Michelle Obama at the White House, she tried to snap a photo of the First Lady to send to her family.
“I felt like a little hick with my eager little iPhone,” Alvarez recalled with a laugh back at her Weybridge home on Tuesday.

I always had a dog growing up. Well not me personally, but my family — an English springer spaniel and later a yellow Labrador, who still vigilantly patrols the boundaries of my parents’ property. But growing up with a dog is not at all the same as owning one, and bearing all the responsibilities entailed.
This year I’ve sort of adopted one of my own — a handsome pointer/pit bull mix named Linus that my girlfriend, Hope, rescued two years ago.
When it comes to people who don’t feel conflicted about their food-buying choices, there are two extremes.
At one end are those who happily subsist on microwave burritos and Cheetos and traipse through life unconcerned about the environmental or nutritional impacts of what they eat. At the other end are those who live primarily on lentils and kefir, certain that they are making the healthiest and most socially conscious decisions about their food.
Vermont is at it again: angling to be a national leader on yet another public policy issue. This time it’s the effort to reduce consumption of sugar-laden beverages.
The angle? Pass a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.
