VUHS blanks Eagles in playoff déja vu

VERGENNES — As the old adage goes, history repeats itself. And on Tuesday in the first round of the Division II baseball tournament, history did just that at Vergennes Union High School.

For the second time this season and for the second straight postseason, VUHS (11-6) outlasted Mount Abraham (6-11) in a highly anticipated match-up, 5-0, behind another stellar pitching performance from Devin Hayes, who quieted the Eagle bats earlier this spring in a 4-0 victory.

Tiger boys’ lax stems the Tide

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 5 Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team coasted in its first-round Division I playoff game against winless visiting No. 12 Spaulding on Tuesday, 16-2.

The victory sets up what should be a competitive quarterfinal on Friday at 7 p.m. at No. 4 Brattleboro (12-4). The 11-5 Tigers and the Colonels have two common opponents, Spaulding and Woodstock.

Keewaydin seeking ecology camp funds

SALISBURY — Boosters of the Keewaydin Environmental Education Center (KEEC) have begun raising money in an effort to maximize the number of area students able to attend the camp each year.

Based in Salisbury along Lake Dunmore, KEEC “offers hands-on, experiential learning” in environmental studies. Drawing from the natural surroundings, KEEC leaders incorporate history, science, math, language arts, geology and physical education into a series of investigations that integrate with the school curriculums.

Tiger nine’s upset bid falls short

HINESBURG — The No. 14 Middlebury Union High School baseball team put a scare into No. 3 seed and defending Division I champion Champlain Valley on Tuesday, but the Redhawks rallied for two runs in the final inning to defeat the Tigers, 5-4.

“We outplayed them all the way through one out in the seventh inning,” said MUHS coach Charlie Messenger.

The Tigers finished at 3-13, while CVU advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 13-4 record.

Locals win gold at D-II state track and field meet

FAIR HAVEN — Vergennes Union High School senior Jon Welch and Middlebury freshman Hannah Buttolph won events at Saturday’s Division II track and field championship meet, which Fair Haven Union High School hosted.

Welch defended his title in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, while Buttolph earned a first-place tie in the girls’ high jump.

Sheldon Museum educates the public on dairy history

MIDDLEBURY — June is Dairy Month, and to celebrate, the Sheldon Museum will present a series of entertaining programs the weekend of June 14. The festivities are taking place in conjunction with the Sheldon’s current exhibit, “From Dairy to Doorstep: Milk Delivery in New England.”
