Clippings: Absence adds spark to local vistas

Posted on July 19, 2012 |
By Kaitlyn Kirkaldy

I recently realized that I don’t appreciate the smell of freshly spread manure enough.

I didn’t suddenly decide that I love the odor, but I have discovered the scent a reminder of home and of the beautiful landscape around me, a landscape that I have not appreciated fully until recently.

I attend college outside of Boston, which is a considerable change in scenery from what I see here in Addison County. Down there I don’t have the same views of rolling mountains and green pastures and the smell of manure is nowhere to be found.

ADDISON COUNTY/HONG KONG — When the crew at Dragonheart Vermont arrived in Hong Kong for the International Dragon Boat Federation’s Club Crew World Championships, the team of breast cancer survivors was overwhelmed.

Under a sky filled with ultra modern skyscrapers, the grueling water conditions were unlike anything the team had ever encountered. Adding to the team’s apprehension, a typhoon slammed the southern Chinese territory the weekend before the races.

MIDDLEBURY — Bristol-based artist Stephanie Larsen literally dreamed up a fundraiser to benefit local domestic violence awareness programs.

Larsen, a domestic abuse survivor herself, was asleep when she imagined how to generate some cash for the Addison County Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (ACCADSV). In her reverie, she saw a group of wonderfully painted lamps and shades illuminating a banner that stated, “Shine a light on domestic violence.”

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police arrested Eric W. Turco, 21, of Rutland, on an outstanding arrest warrant out of Windham County for impersonating a public officer.

Police said they positively identified Turco by his fingerprints and, after arresting him, took him to the Marble Valley Correctional Center.
