Victor Nuovo: Friendship — the tie that binds

Posted on May 18, 2017 |

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Sen. Claire Ayer

As you know, Gov. Scott, along with the Vermont School Boards Association and the Vermont Superintendents Association, has proposed that the state save up to $26 million by taking over teacher healthcare benefits. The governor has stated that he will veto a budget without these savings incorporated.

Editorial: Legalizing marijuana: A very savvy bill Gov. Scott can sign

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

While Gov. Phil Scott’s coup to have the state negotiate teachers’ health care benefits has been the unforeseen show-stopper of this legislative session, that a bill moving toward legalizing marijuana made it to the governor’s desk is one of the session’s biggest surprises.

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Millard M. Cox

Here we go again — Vermont public school teachers and their union are being made the scapegoat, blamed for high taxes and the high cost of health care in the state. Can anyone seriously believe that bullying the teachers can save the state $26 million? What are the real causes of the rising costs of health care?

Letters to the Editor: Time to work against animal traps

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Holly Tippett

A significant majority of Vermonters want to ban trapping and eliminate the wasteful killing of wildlife.

The 2017 Vermonter Poll conducted by UVM’s Center for Rural Studies included questions asking Vermonters how they feel about the use of steel leg-hold traps, body crushing traps and drowning traps to kill wildlife. This is a relevant issue now as the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board is considering extending the otter trapping season.

Letters to the Editor: 1870 Mother's Day words valid today

Posted on May 15, 2017 |
By Bunny Daubner

Arise then, women of this day? Arise all women who have hearts whether our baptism be that of water or tears! . . .We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says “Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”

From Julia Ward Howe’s 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation for Peace

Jessie Raymond: It's very easy to get teed off at golf

Posted on May 11, 2017 |
By Jessie Raymond

For years, I’d been looking for a hobby with a steep learning curve that would make me feel like a failure over and over again.

Then last year, I discovered golf.
