Opinion: More info needed on marijuana's impact on drivers

Posted on April 25, 2016 |
By John Mitchell

There is so much talk about the legalization of marijuana and the medical benefits, say nothing of the money to be made with the growing and selling of the herb, that there is one issue that I never hear discussed. One issue that would make me fearful of people who are taking the herb and driving. And that is: how much of the herb when ingested or smoked is acceptable for the person to be in full command of their senses on our highways.

Opinion: Crisis, emergency repair and a long term fix

Posted on April 25, 2016 |
By Jan Demers

It was Friday night and he had no heat. His furnace was broken beyond repair. He was elderly, living alone and without any means to pay for a new furnace. CVOEO’s Crisis Fuel Program and then the Weatherization Emergency Heating program were called. Jeremy Francis, a CVOEO auditor, met him at his home. The furnace was replaced on Saturday morning. It was an emergency. The furnace needed to have an immediate fix or he could not stay in his home.

Jessie Raymond: Yoga helps keep 'Bigfoot' at bay

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

Getting out of bed a while back, I heard a creaking sound.

It was me.

I’m not saying I normally expect to wake up, spring to my feet, jeté into the hall and then somersaulting down the stairs like a Slinky. My mornings start with a subdued but single-minded shuffle from the bed to the coffeemaker.

But this winter I started noticing a measurable lapse of time between “sitting up in bed” and “standing up.” My muscles and joints seem to resent the sudden change in plans.

I just turned 48. What gives?

Gregory Dennis: Echoes of the ski winter that wasn't

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Gregory Dennis

Most of us have moved on from winter. But for skiers, the memories of the past season echo like one long car crash.

Most Vermonters have enjoyed a winter of lower heating bills and the occasional day without wool hat and gloves. Skiers and boarders, though, have suffered through the worst winter in living memory.

Someone reported that this was the mildest winter since 1955-56. I can’t really confirm that, having been three years old at the time.

Opinion: Pulling the plug saves energy

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Laura Asermily

April’s school vacation week is a perfect time to take a “Hibernation Vacation” by turning off or unplugging all unneeded appliances before everyone heads out.

Heating water is the biggest household electric hog. Have you considered turning off your water heater when gone for longer periods of time and freezing pipes aren’t a concern?

Opinion: Flag vandalism is unacceptable

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By David Preble

Vandalism in Middlebury Cemetery. Along the road from the tennis courts at Middlebury College to Route 30, someone has been destroying flags.

Not only is this disrespectful of the American flag, it is trespassing on private property (family gravesites), but also disrespectful of the veterans that fought for our country.

As you walk or drive down the row, you can see the flags have been ripped off and only the wooden dowels are left. Local police and college security have been alerted.

Opinion: Next president will inherit a foreign policy challenge

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By George Jaeger

Among the most disturbing aspects of this bizarre election season is the absence of any serious discussion of America’s foreign affairs.

Endless debates have produced simplistic themes that play to the gut feelings of parts of the electorate. But relatively little attention has been paid to the most critical world issues America will have to face in the years ahead.

Opinion: Moving from a vision to a plan at Porter Medical Center

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Dr. Fred Kniffen

This week’s writer is Dr. Fred Kniffin, interim CEO of Porter Medical Center

In my first “Community Commentary” as the interim CEO of Porter Medical Center, I focused my message on the status of adult primary care here in Addison County and the recent loss of a number of valued physician colleagues. Clearly, this is among the most immediate and important issues we need to address as an organization and community.
