Letter to the Editor: Grant supports Lincoln effort

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Andrew Furtsch

Kudos to the Addison Independent for publishing such an in depth-article about this wonderful community project in the March 16 edition. Thank you!

One small caveat, and it has only to do with the headline, which read, “Quarter-million-dollar playground upgrade planned in Lincoln.” My concern is that people who didn’t read the article might have thought mistakenly that this project was going to be funded via taxes, which it most assuredly will not.

Letter to the Editor: Hospital union best for patients

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Desiree Roberts

As a lifelong resident of Addison and Chittenden counties, I am writing to you in support of the LNA’s fight to unionize at the UVM Medical Center. Not only do I believe in unions, and the combined power of the labor force to fight for their own rights and needs, I believe that without a union to negotiate over safe staffing, wages and working conditions it ultimately leads to harm of the patients that rely on UVM medical network.

Letter to the Editor: Snow removal rapped, defended

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Robert Deeble and Bill Kernan

Last Thursday I went to pay my property tax at the Middlebury town offices. I had to park by the Post Office so I had the opportunity to walk the entire length of downtown Middlebury. The sidewalks were plowed, but entirely covered with hard packed snow with mounds of snow lining Main Street making for a dangerous walking situation unless you were wearing ice grippers on your boots. I walked past Autumn Gold Jewelry. Across the street on the second floor was the apartment I lived in from 1972-73.

Letter to the Editor: Helen Porter fills vital niche in health care provision

Posted on March 23, 2017 |
By Rev. Lucy C.B. Pellegrini

As a resident of Addison County since 1975, I have a great deal of respect for the many medical practices and practitioners in Addison County. From the expertise and care of the private, single doctor offices that have evolved into a larger Porter Medical Center system, the standard of compassionate care and professionalism has been exceptionally high. That evolution and the years of innovation were not without struggle and pain. Practices, staff and patients have been challenged by insurances, management decisions, changes in diagnoses, technology and high costs.

Editorial: TrumpCare's big sin

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

By now, the biggest sin of the GOP health care bill is well known: it’s a tax cut bill masquerading as a health care plan. Simply put, it takes health care away from lower-income and middle-income Americans who need it most, and it cuts taxes on the rich and super-rich by $600 billion.

Editorial: Leadership is the difference

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

When I think of the cliché “what a difference a year makes,” my mind races in numerous directions. First to the national elections with Sen. Bernie Sanders on his surprising run against Sec. Hillary Clinton, and to Trump’s embarassing and shocking success against more experienced and better educated rivals, but also, more locally, of the turmoil Porter Hospital faced a year ago and how it has progressed.

Letter to the Editor: Student behavior shows college is failing to educate

Posted on March 20, 2017 |
By Steven Nothern

Following the violence on March 2, Middlebury College officials and college President Patton would shift blame to “outside agitators,” and encourage us to believe this was a one off. There is, however, every indication of a more systemic problem at the college. I am a graduate of Middlebury College, class of 1978. My wife taught in the language department. We are both very dismayed by what we can only describe as the intellectual intolerance of the academy.
