After 32 years of town planning, Dunnington plans to retire

MIDDLEBURY — After serving more than three decades as Middlebury’s town planner, Fred Dunnington will literally sail into retirement come July 1.

Dunnington, 59, and his longtime partner, Dorothy Mammen plan to set sail this summer for adventures on the high seas — though they promised that Middlebury will remain their home port.

Chili Festival returns to Middlebury this Saturday

MIDDLEBURY — The Better Middlebury Partnership announces the fifth annual Vermont Chili Festival, taking place on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Named one of the Top 10 Winter Events for the past four years by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, the event includes street jugglers, face painting, entertainment for kids, live music, a beverage tent, and award-winning chili, all located on the streets of historic downtown Middlebury.

Books to be dedicated to babies in Bristol

BRISTOL — The Lawrence Memorial Library is celebrating its eighth year of the “Books for Babies” program, in which a new picture book is dedicated to each baby/toddler born to a family in Bristol in the previous year. Thanks to joint funding support from the (now retired) Bristol Outlook Club and Wells Mountain Foundation, the library was able to purchase books for all 39 babies born during 2012. Families may come in and select one of the 39 books to receive a bookplate bearing their child’s name.

Sutherland to show cut-paper artwork at Walkover

BRISTOL — Pete Sutherland is well known as a folk musician and songwriter, but he is gaining recognition for his artwork in the genre of cut-paper collage. The WalkOver Gallery in Bristol will exhibit his collages from March 1-29, with an opening reception on Friday, March 8, from 5-7 p.m.

Mount Abe high school spending pegged to rise 2 percent

BRISTOL — Voters in the five towns that make up the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Tuesday will weigh in on a proposed Mount Abraham Union High School budget for the 2013-2014 year that features $13,812,984 in spending.

That figure represents and increase of just under 2 percent, compared to the $13,542,142 approved for the current fiscal year.

Bristol asks questions about firehouse bond

BRISTOL — At a Monday evening public hearing on a proposed expansion of the Bristol firehouse, a handful of residents — many who live near the facility — raised questions about the size of the building and the speed with which the proposal is being pushed on voters.

On Town Meeting Day, Bristol residents will vote on a $375,000 bond to fund an architectural design to expand the fire department’s North Street facility and to purchase a neighboring lot at 2 Garfield St. to accommodate the expansion.

Legislature honors Rep. Greg Clark with resolution

Vermont lawmakers on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution honoring the late Rep. Greg Clark, delivering a standing ovation to members of his family while sharing heartfelt reminiscences about the longtime Addison-3 lawmaker and educator who died last Nov. 30 following a traffic accident on Route 7 in Waltham.

Benton, Jin vying to lead Vergennes

VERGENNES — On Tuesday, Vergennes residents will choose in a two-person race for mayor between an incumbent one-term alderman and a former multi-term alderwoman and one-term mayor who has thrown her hat back in the ring after several years away from city politics.

Each, Alderman Bill Benton and former mayor April Jin, has been active in the community and is a long-time resident of Vergennes. Both are married with three grown children who have attended city schools.
