Deer hunters set new mark, kill over 1,000 in 2016 season

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County weigh stations handled more deer in 2016 than in any year since 2005, when Vermont Fish & Wildlife officials banned hunters from shooting spikehorn bucks in November’s rifle season, the most popular of the state’s deer hunting seasons.

Middlebury rail bridges project delayed for at least a year

MIDDLEBURY — A four-year, $40 million overhaul of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges will be delayed for at least another year, in light of a decision by state and federal transportation authorities to submit the project to an Environmental Assessment.

New winter celebration to light up Bristol next week

BRISTOL — Bristol community leaders are planning a new night of live flame, celebration and light to drive the darkness away.

“Lumen,” as the new celebration is called, will take place downtown on next Friday, Dec. 23.

Loan could create a beverage hub in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury town officials on Tuesday agreed to float kombucha brewer Aqua ViTea a $125,000 loan to upgrade its Pond Lane headquarters with new equipment.

The hope is that the company could someday share the equipment with other small beverage companies seeking to get their start in the beverage industry, and in the process build the town’s reputation as a beverage hub.

Dog is man's best friend, or so they say. But Fergus and Keller are more than just friends to Patrick Berry —they're tools. Equal to his hunter orange jacket, field boots or shotgun, Berry relies on his pups for a successful bird hunt.

Sure, Fergus and Keller have the standard cold wet noses, heart-melting brown eyes, a dedicated eagerness to please and, of course, unconditional love; but what sets them apart from the pooch sitting on your couch and mine is their training —ahem? OK, and their breeding.

Cirque de Fuego bringing fire show to Bristol on Dec. 23

BRISTOL — Bristol will be ablaze next Friday evening with fire spinners, fire breathers and lots and lots of candles. But don’t worry, it’s all perfectly safe. Cirque de Fuego, a husband and wife team from Jericho, will be doing all the fancy fire art at Lumen: Bristol’s Celebration of Fire and Light on Dec. 23. (See related story).

Middlebury OKs rail deal again — with opposition

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday affirmed two key agreements with the Vermont Agency of Transportation governing the looming $40 million replacement of two downtown bridges, and also agreed to hire an independent engineer to review the project plans to make sure they are sound.

Man killed in a Middlebury house fire Wednesday

MIDDLEBURY — A 96-year-old man lost his life in a fire at his home on Murdock Court in Middlebury on Wednesday evening.

The Middlebury Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at 7 Murdock Court — off Weybridge Street — at a little past 7:30 p.m. The call came from a family member who came home and found the house filled with smoke. He informed authorities that the man may be inside.
