Eagle scholars win competition

BRISTOL — A team of eight quick-thinking Mount Abraham Union High School students have won the inaugural small-school state championship at the Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl.

The group of scholars bested 23 other teams to win the inaugural event on Jan. 31 at Montpelier High School. The Vermont Scholars’ Bowl has been around since 1984, but this was the first year that the event divided schools into two categories, based on size.

Mount Abe seeking level funding in FY 2016 budget

BRISTOL — On Town Meeting Day, residents of the five-town area will vote on a proposed Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School budget that features spending that is virtually the same as what was approved for the current fiscal year.

The Fiscal Year 2015-2016 budget, approved by the Mount Abe board last week, calls for $14.06 million in spending, which is a fraction of a percent less than the $14.09 million spending plan voters approved last year.

Mt. Abe's Moody to represent Vt. at Senate program in Washington

BRISTOL — A Mount Abraham Union High School senior was selected from a pool of Vermont high school students to represent the state at a nationwide conference in Washington, D.C., this spring.

Isabelle Moody of Monktonand a Brattleboro student will form Vermont’s delegation to the United States Senate Youth Program, a conference created by the federal government in 1962 for exceptional students interested in careers in public service.

Top stories of 2014: #3 — Upgrades to Mt. Abe, Bristol firehouse in spotlight

This past year in Bristol and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union, residents debated two major projects that would require taxpayer-approved bonds: a new Bristol firehouse and a renovated Mount Abraham Union High School.

The Bristol Fire Department inched closer to getting a new firehouse this year, a process that firefighters have discussed for more than two decades.

BRISTOL — If the clue was “The Mount Abraham Union High School graduate who appeared on Jeopardy! last week,” the answer would be “Who is Daniel Eling?”

Eling, 36, earned a spot on the popular quiz show after three years of trying. He said it was a lifelong dream of his.

“I wanted to be on the show for a long time, for 25 years,” he said.

Sarah Jane Grundon — known to everyone but her parents as SJ — has a goal more ambitious than most. She wants to represent the United States in the Winter Olympics as a freestyle skier.

Eagles moved to D-II in football proposal

HARTFORD — Major alignment changes were proposed for Vermont’s three high school football divisions last week at the Vermont Interscholastic Football League annual meeting at Hartford High School, including a move of the Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative program from Division III to Division II.

Mount Abe board looks to draft new bond proposal

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board, at their meeting Tuesday evening, performed an autopsy on the lopsided defeat of a $32.6 million bond proposal to renovate the aging Bristol school.

The board came to a consensus on the primary reason the bond failed: taxpayers were unwilling to foot the bill.

Residents of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union’s five sending towns on Nov. 4 voted down the proposal, 3,328 to 1,239.

Commodore duo tops Independent soccer all-star squad

ADDISON COUNTY — The four local union high school boys’ soccer teams didn’t really make their mark this fall, with only Vergennes winning a postseason contest.

But each squad played a number of competitive contests, especially Coach Kevin Hayes’ 5-8-3 Commodores, who lost seven times by one goal, twice to Division II champion Rice.
