City to hold hearing on zoning change

The Vergennes City Council will hold a public hearing on a zoning change that could pave the way for 130-unit workforce housing development.

Bristol’s planning commission has spent the past several months exploring potential changes to the town’s zoning regulations that would help expand housing opportunities in and around Bristol’s village area.

In an abbreviated April 25 meeting, the Vergennes City Council approved a zoning amendment officials said was intended to correct a mistake in the update to the Vergennes zoning laws the city adopted in January. 

A Vergennes zoning change finally won city council approval last week, and the committee charged with advising Vergennes officials on the hire of a new police chief is set to interview two finalists this week.

Councilors want to make the zoning regs “as close to perfect as we can get them,” but don’t want to delay implementation.

The Middlebury Planning Commission continues to work on revisions to the community’s zoning rules that in part incentivize development in the village area while preserving the history and character of Addison County’s shire town.

After hearing testimony at an April 12 public hearing from two residents in favor of new zoning and subdivision regulations, the Vergennes City Council scheduled a second, and most likely final, hearing for 5:30 p.m. on May 10.
