VUHS baseball reaches semis but falls, 10-6

The Vergennes Union High School softball team, the No. 6 seed in the Division III playoffs, on Tuesday shrugged off an early deficit to visiting No. 11 White River Valley and cruised to a 10-4 victory. 

Track and field athletes from Mount Abraham, Middlebury and Vergennes union high schools competed in several meets last week.

On a Tuesday afternoon not fit for man nor beast, never mind baseball, an exciting game of the latter nevertheless broke out at Vergennes Union High School, when the host Commodores needed eight innings to get past rival Mount Abraham, 11-10.

VUHS students’ results in a national survey on school climate show many are unhappy. Only 41% of the school’s students — grades 7 through 12 — said they felt a sense of belonging there.

The Middlebury Union High School softball team on Tuesday picked up a needed win after a recent rough patch, playing excellent defense and getting hits from everyone in the lineup in a 12-3 victory at Vergennes.

The difficulties the Division III Vergennes Union High School baseball team have had so far this spring against D-I and D-II opponents continued on Saturday, when D-II U-32 topped the Commodores, 6-1. 

Division II title contender Hartford breezed past the D-II Mount Abraham-Vergennes boys’ lacrosse team on Monday, 18-3, dropping the Eagles’ record to 3-2. 

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes girls’ lacrosse team breezed past host Harwood on Tuesday, 16-4, as the Commodores moved their record back to .500 at 3-3.

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes boys’ lacrosse team knocked off host St. Johnsbury, a Division-II team, 12-9.

The spring’s first no-hitter helped Otter Valley defeat rival Fair Haven twice to highlight recent local high school baseball action, while Vergennes came up short in two outings.

CVU defeated the Mount Abraham-Vergennes girls’ lacrosse team on Tuesday, 18-8.

In recent high school softball action, Vergennes coasted in five innings, Otter Valley won twice and Middlebury split two games with Division I competition.

In a Monday rematch of the 2022 Division II girls’ lacrosse state final, defending champion Hartford pulled away in the second half to defeat the host Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative team, 13-4, in a rain-drenched affair. 

Nobody on the Division III Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative boys’ lacrosse team or coaching staff was too unhappy after a 13-10 home loss to Harwood on Tuesday afternoon.
