Summer offers opportunities to stay active

From exploring a new hiking trail to swimming in Lake Champlain, summer in the Green Mountain State offers numerous opportunities to stay active while enjoying the outdoors.

Saturday’s Vermont State Triathlon championships at Branbury State Park, on Lake Dunmore, in Salisbury was held in perfect conditions.

In the finale of this summer’s Vermont Sun Triathlon Series on Sunday, Noel Mulkey of Saint Albans held off a hard-charging Kyle Friis of Middlebury to win the Olympic distance Lake Dunmore Triathlon (1,600-yard swim, 28-mile bike, 6.2-mile run).

Middlebury’s Emmet Schmehling won the Vermont Sun Half marathon on Sunday in 1:28:16, while Sacha Boisvert of Verdun, Quebec, claimed second in 1:31:47.

Moretown’s Lance Parker and Burlington’s Elsa Chinburg were tops among more than 300 athletes entered in two Vermont Sun triathlons on Sunday.

When triathletes arrived at Salisbury’s Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore on Sunday morning, they were greeted with rain, 54 degrees and a 20 mph north wind.

Freeport, Maine’s Wilson Moore, 24, ran a 5:49-per-mile pace over 13.1 miles on Sunday to win the Vermont Sun Half Marathon with an overall time of 1:16:09.

Tim Russell, 33, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., set a new course record while winning the men’s Vermont Sun Triathlon on Sunday in an event based at Branbury State Park.

Saturday’s beautiful early summer weather welcomed more than 150 athletes to Branbury State Park in Salisbury for two Vermont Sun triathlon races — a sprint triathlon and Olympic distance triathlon, which were designated as state championship races.
