Latest Branbury triathlon draws 200 racers

On this past Saturday at Branbury State Park, Tim Russell of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., won the men’s Vermont Sun Triathlon in 1:00:30, and the women’s winner was Shannon Sweeney of Tampa, Fla., in 1:13:41.

Saturday’s Vermont State Triathlon championships at Branbury State Park, on Lake Dunmore, in Salisbury was held in perfect conditions.

In the finale of this summer’s Vermont Sun Triathlon Series on Sunday, Noel Mulkey of Saint Albans held off a hard-charging Kyle Friis of Middlebury to win the Olympic distance Lake Dunmore Triathlon (1,600-yard swim, 28-mile bike, 6.2-mile run).

Middlebury’s Emmet Schmehling won the Vermont Sun Half marathon on Sunday in 1:28:16, while Sacha Boisvert of Verdun, Quebec, claimed second in 1:31:47.

Moretown’s Lance Parker and Burlington’s Elsa Chinburg were tops among more than 300 athletes entered in two Vermont Sun triathlons on Sunday.

In retrospect, it’s not difficult to see how Neily Jennings became a triathlete. “I’ve just always been an active person. I enjoy cross-country skiing. I enjoy biking. I like to be outside hiking, kayaking,” Jennings said.

When triathletes arrived at Salisbury’s Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore on Sunday morning, they were greeted with rain, 54 degrees and a 20 mph north wind.

The Vermont Sun 5K, 10K and Half Marathon will be held Sunday, May 14 at Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore in Salisbury. 

This past Saturday’s Vermont Sun triathlons drew the largest number of competitors in Vermont this season.

Saturday’s beautiful early summer weather welcomed more than 150 athletes to Branbury State Park in Salisbury for two Vermont Sun triathlon races — a sprint triathlon and Olympic distance triathlon, which were designated as state championship races.

The Vermont Sun 5K, 10K and Half Marathon will be held Sunday, May 15, at Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore in Salisbury. The series continues with three Triathlon dates.
