Commodores edge Tigers in boys’ soccer at MUHS field

In a hard-fought and at times physical boys’ soccer game on Tuesday, visiting Vergennes converted one of its nine corner kicks midway through the second half and made that goal stand up to defeat Middlebury, 1-0. The best Middlebury College men’s soccer season in 17 years came to an end when Amherst defeated the Panthers, 2-1, an NCAA semifinal.

The Panthers defeated the Stags, 1-0, to win on Saturday, then played Babson to penalty kicks in Sunday’s Sectional final.

Seventeen members of the Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Vergennes and Otter Valley girls’ soccer teams received postseason recognition from either the Lake Division or the Southern Valley League B Division.

Twenty-five members of the Mount Abraham, Middlebury and Vergennes union high school boys’ soccer teams received postseason recognition from the six-team Lake Division. 

The second-seeded Middlebury College men’s soccer team erupted for three goals in the first 13 minutes of this past Saturday’s NESCAC quarterfinal against visiting No. 7 Hamilton and went on to a 4-2 victory.

In local high school girls’ soccer postseason action, the biggest news was Mount Abraham, the No. 7 seed in Division II, won twice — once over No. 10 Middlebury in the first round — to reach the semifinal round against a traditional playoff rival.

Host No. 3 Stratton on Friday, Oct. 25, ousted the No. 6 seeded Mount Abraham boys’ soccer team from the Division II playoffs, 6-3, in a quarterfinal matchup. Stratton moved into the semifinal round with a 10-2 record, while the Eagles finished at 11-5 un … (read more)

Only the Mount Abraham boys’ soccer team survived first-round playoff action on Tuesday, as the sixth-seeded Eagles prevailed at home in a Division II matchup.

The Mount Abraham and Otter Valley girls’ soccer teams each earned first-round home games in the Division II high school playoffs when seeds were awarded this week, and the Eagles were set to entertain county foe Middlebury in the first round.
