Local girls varsity skiers take top spots in large field

The race at Rikert Outdoor Center was the final home meet for MUHS this season.

Varsity skiers took top spots during last Thursday’s meet, and two local athletes made their varsity debut.

Three local high school Nordic skiers secured top-five finishes during the Dec. 30 Sleepy Hollow Classic Relay in Huntington.

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ Nordic team on Tuesday won a season-opening sprint race on home snow at Rikert Outdoor Center, while the girls’ team took fifth. 

Bristol’s Emma Crum finished among the top competitors at the 2025 NCAA Skiing National Championships, hosted March 5-8 by Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

On Friday, Jan. 3, the Middlebury Union High School Nordic ski teams competed on their home trails at Rikert Outdoor Center in 3-kilometer classic races hosted by the Mount Mansfield team.

Stick season — it’s too cold to bike and too warm to ski — but it doesn’t have to be a wasted season. The effort you put in now to get in shape for skiing will pay off when Rikert Outdoor Center in Ripton gets groomed, and the trails are open.

Lisa Bernardin, a Middlebury resident and masters Nordic skier (those individuals who are over the age of 30), has recently begun spending time working on skills needed for a favorite pastime — cross-country skiing.

Middlebury College as appointed Justin Beckwith as the new full-time, year-round manager of the Rikert Outdoor Center in Ripton. This marks a historic moment as Beckwith becomes the first full-time, year-round manager in Rikert’s history.

The MUHS girls’ Nordic ski team on Friday completed its dominant performance in the two-day Division II championship meet by trouncing all comers in freestyle races in Craftsbury.
