Middlebury lacrosse cruises to third NCAA title

It would be fair to label this year’s NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament the Middlebury Invitational. 

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative boys’ lacrosse team won a pair of recent games to improve to 8-4 and apparently lock down the No. 2 seed in Division III. Playoff pairings will be announced Monday.

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team picked up two more recent wins, including another over defending Division I champion South Burlington, and improved to 10-2.

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team rode strong defense and goaltending and a gritty all-around effort on Friday, May 17, to its biggest win of the season, an 11-6 home decision over previously undefeated visiting Champlain Valley. 

Bowdoin went on a 6-0 fourth-quarter run in a Saturday NCAA Division III quarterfinal played in Rochester on the way to ousting the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team from the tournament, 12-7.

The Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative boys’ lacrosse team split two recent games; their record stands at 6-4, good enough to maintain a hold on second place in the Division III standings behind Green Mountain Valley, which as of Tuesday was 6-1.

After falling behind, 1-0, the undefeated Panthers on Sunday unleashed a fierce defense that held Pomona-Pitzer to four shots on goal and earned Middlebury a 16-1 victory.

The Mount Abraham/Vergennes girls’ lacrosse team swept three recent games, improving the squad’s winning streak to seven straight and remaining in second place in Division II with an 8-2 record. 

The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team won two out of three recent games to improve to 5-3. The Tigers will play at CVU on Friday and visit Mount Abraham/Vergennes on Tuesday.

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes boys’ lacrosse team split two road games between May 8 and 14, giving the Eagles a 5-3 record heading into a scheduled Wednesday, May 15, home game vs. Division II power Harwood. 

The Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative girls’ lacrosse team blanked host Lyndon, 17-0, this past Friday in the Commodores’ only action between May 1 and 7.
