Letter to the editor: Ethical hunting, not trapping, should be encouraged

How, one might wonder, will new people be motivated to become hunters if it means joining a group that believes itself vilified and threatened, and reacts with anger toward anyone who speaks of mitigating harm to wildlife?

The anti-trapping crowd love to trot out the usual “inhumane,” “outmoded and harmful,” “unnecessarily painful” emotional appeals. None of these arguments are objective or “science-based” and are purely subjective.

Vermont has a special spring snow goose hunting opportunity that will be held from March 11 through April 23.

Waterfowl hunters who did not remove their hunting blinds from the waters of the state earlier must do so before Feb. 15 on Lake Champlain or May 15 on inland waters according to a reminder from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

Vermont 2023 hunting, trapping, and fishing licenses, as well as the 2023 lawbooks for these activities, are now available on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department’s website and wherever licenses are sold.

Many hunters were successful locally as Vermont’s 16-day rifle season for deer opened this past weekend — but not as many as in most recent seasons.

Eighty-eight young and first-time hunters brought deer they’d shot to Addison County’s wildlife reporting stations during Youth Hunting Weekend on Oct. 22-23.

Hunters are gearing up for the start of Vermont’s traditionally popular 16-day regular deer season that begins Saturday, November 12, and ends Sunday, November 27. 

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is asking hunters for help gathering biological data on the state’s deer population.

The time that deer are most active, during the dawn and dusk hours, are times of especially low visibility.

Vermont’s 2022 archery deer season begins Saturday, Oct. 1. There are two sessions of the season — Oct. 1-Nov. 11 and again from Nov. 28-Dec. 15.
