Eagle girls mount strong defense

It’s a good place to start while trying to win soccer games if a team doesn’t allow a shot on goal, and that’s just what the Mount Abraham girls accomplished against visiting Peoples Academy on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles came away with a 1-0 victory.

The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team outscored host Middlebury, 3-1, this past Saturday in the season debut for both teams.

The Division II Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative football team started their season on Saturday with a 30-20 victory at Mill River, a D-III playoff team a year ago. The game was the opener for both teams. 

It could be said two baseball teams won Saturday night’s Division II high school baseball final between No. 6 Mount Abraham and No. 8 Middlebury, which was played at UVM’s Centennial Field.

The Mount Abraham baseball team is going to the Division II championship contest for the first time since winning the last of six titles under former Coach Jeff Stetson in 2016. 

The second-seeded Mount Abraham/Vergennes boys’ lacrosse team rolled past No. 3 Fairfax on Tuesday, 15-6, in a Division III semifinal. On Saturday at 1:30 p.m., the 10-4 Eagles will play for the program’s first title at Norwich University.

Host No. 2 seed Lyndon ousted the No. 7 seed and defending champion Mount Abraham softball team in a Division II quarterfinal on Friday, June 7, 13-10. 

In a Tuesday matchup with Division II postseason implications, the Mount Abraham baseball team survived a wild seventh-inning rally by visiting Middlebury to prevail, 10-9. 

The Middlebury Union High School softball team continued to roll on Tuesday, this time at the expense of host and defending Division II champion Mount Abraham. The Tigers won, 17-4, in six innings. 

The Mount Abraham Union High School baseball team just might be ready to make a move up in the Division II standings. 

The spring of 2023 overall treated Mount Abraham Union High School athletes pretty well, even considering a few glitches.

Tuesday’s first-round Division II opponent for the No. 6 Mount Abraham girls’ basketball team wasn’t just anyone — the 13-7 Eagles and No. 11 Spaulding, who came in 9-11 against a tough schedule, have a lot of recent history. 

There were good reasons to expect a competitive first-round Division II boys’ basketball playoff matchup on Tuesday between host No. 6 Otter Valley and No. 11. Mount Abraham.
