The United States Department of Agriculture late last week declared Vermont’s dairy cattle free of bird flu, according to a press release from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture Food and Markets. The agency’s milk sampling program shows no affected dairy cattle as of this past Friday.
As warmer weather and peeping baby chicks mark the springtime return of migrating wild birds and backyard flocks, state health and agriculture officials are encouraging people to keep themselves and their feathered friends healthy.
Most recently the virus has been detected in domestic turkeys in Indiana, broiler chickens in Kentucky, wild ducks in New Hampshire, and a backyard flock of mixed species birds in Virginia.
