VUHS baseball out of D-III running

Top-seeded Thetford held off the No. 9 Vergennes Union High School baseball team, 5-2, on Saturday in a Division III quarterfinal. 

Have you been to Cooperstown? Recently? It’s about three and a half hours from here, the last 45 minutes of which are off the thruway and run through the beautiful hilly terrain of central New York.

On paper Tuesday’s Division II first-round playoff game between the host No. 8 seed Middlebury Union High School baseball team and No. 9 Otter Valley looked like a close game. 

The No. 6 Mount Abraham baseball team in Division II and the No. 9 Vergennes squad in D-III each won first-round games on Tuesday and advanced to quarterfinals scheduled for Friday. 

In a Tuesday matchup with Division II postseason implications, the Mount Abraham baseball team survived a wild seventh-inning rally by visiting Middlebury to prevail, 10-9.

Rivalry games highlighted the baseball schedule in the past week: Middlebury stayed hot and defeated Mount Abraham, but the Eagles recovered to knock off Vergennes. 

The Middlebury College baseball team won two games at a four-team, double-elimination NCAA Division III regional at Misericordia University this past weekend, but the host school defeated the Panthers in the regional final, 6-4, on Sunday. 

The Mount Abraham Union High School baseball team just might be ready to make a move up in the Division II standings. 

The Middlebury Union High School baseball team took an early lead against visiting rival Vergennes Union High School on Tuesday, and then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning on the way to an 11-1 victory. The game was ended on the 10-run merc … (read more)

In recent high school baseball play, the Vergennes and Middlebury union teams each split recent games, with the Tigers earning their first spring victory, while Otter Valley won once in three outings, losing to top teams. 

Visiting Fair Haven used two big innings and a complete-game effort from sophomore pitcher Mason Gutel to get past the Middlebury Union High School baseball team on Tuesday, 9-3.

Otter Valley, Mount Abraham and Vergennes all posted wins in recent high school baseball play. One of OV’s wins was at the Eagles’ expense, but Mount Abe bounced back to win twice. The Commodores’ victory was their first of the spring. 

Mount Abraham broke into the win column behind a pitching gem to provide the only highlight for the area’s high school baseball teams in recent action. 

“I think my passion for baseball started when I was four or five and my dad gave me a baseball card — a card of Albert Belle (a star for the Cleveland Indians),” Freddy Mosier told me over a beer at Fire and Ice last Sunday evening.
