Mt. Abe baseball upset in quarterfinal

After a heartbreaking loss in the 2024 Division II final, the Mount Abraham baseball team wore T-shirts this year that read, “Unfinished Business.”

Sometimes it’s what you don’t do that matters. On Tuesday, Vergennes Union High School baseball players chose not to swing at pitches out of the strike zone.

Mount Abraham and Vergennes were winners in the first round of high school baseball playoffs on Tuesday, but defending Division II champion Middlebury and Otter Valley each were ousted.

Two Brothers Tavern in Middlebury next week will help launch the season of the Vermont Lake Monsters, the professional baseball team in Burlington.

In a rematch of the dramatic 2024 Division II championship game, Mount Abraham baseball earned a measure of payback over MUHS, when the Eagles broke open a 2-2 game and came away with 11-5 victory.

In a Tuesday baseball game at Vergennes Union High School that mixed in solid pitching and sparkling defense with a few critical miscues, the host Commodores rallied past Middlebury for a rare victory over their county rivals, 4-2.

Baseball teams from Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Middlebury union high schools all picked up victories in recent action. The Tigers’ triumph was their first of the season, while in taking two of three Mount Abe took its first setback of the spring.

In county high school baseball action in the past week, Mount Abe held on for a one-run victory over Otter Valley, Vergennes won two nailbiters, and Middlebury lost a slugfest in its only outing that wasn’t rained out.

In two of their final tune-ups for the upcoming NESCAC tournament, the Middlebury College baseball team took two games from Skidmore this past weekend, 13-3 at Skidmore on Friday, and 13-7 at home on Sunday.

The Mount Abraham baseball team on Tuesday rallied for a 7-3 victory over host Spaulding, improving to 2-0 in the process.
