Vergennes Police Log: Trucker fined for overweight load

VERGENNES — On Aug. 25, Vergennes Police stopped a truck on Main Street and ended up fining the driver $5,912 for carrying an overweight load.

City police added the driver had exceeded his legally permitted hours of operation, and they placed the truck out of service for 10 hours.

In other activity between Aug. 23 and 29, Vergennes Police conducted a dozen patrols by cruiser and two on foot, helped three motorists enter their locked vehicles, and:

On Aug. 23:

•  Discussed a boundary issue with a property owner.

•  Helped a Ferrisburgh resident who alleged a vagrant had twice entered his home.

•  Issued a no-trespass order to a person who had allegedly stolen Benadryl from Kinney Drug Store. Police said the person will probably also be cited for retail theft.

On Aug. 24:

•  Provided safety tips to a local business.

•  Took a report of vandalism to a vehicle parked on School Street.

•  Dealt with a minor two-car accident in a Panton Road parking lot.

•  Returned to its owner a wallet that had been found at Field Days.

On Aug. 25:

•  Responded to a disabled truck on Main Street.

•  Served paperwork to a Main Street resident on behalf of the state’s attorney’s office and the Vermont Department for Children and Families.

•  Went to the City Limits tavern to help the owner deal with an unwanted patron, who then left without incident.

On Aug. 26:

•  Helped a Main Street business owner by identifying the owner of a parked vehicle.

•  Aided a motorist on Main Street.

•  Took a report of internet fraud in which a resident ordered merchandise from a scammer posting as a Walmart affiliate.

On Aug. 27:

•  Calmed a family dispute centered on a Cataract Lane residence.

•  Took a report from a Burlington resident who formerly lived on Cataract Lane alleging illegal drug activity.

•  Calmed a family dispute at a West Main Street residence.

On Aug. 28:

•  Took a report from a West Main Street resident that her granddaughter, while walking by her home, had insulted her in Spanish using an expletive.

•  Issued two no-trespass orders to a Walker Avenue resident on behalf of neighbors.

•  On behalf of Vermont State Police, evaluated a driver at the city station for driving under the influence of drugs.

On Aug. 29:

•  Investigated the theft of several items from Kinney Drug Store. Police said they have a suspect, but as of Wednesday had not tracked the individual down.

•  Destroyed a bag of marijuana a student had found in the Vergennes Union High School parking lot.
