ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls’ and Middlebury Union boys’ teams provided the high school lacrosse highlights in the past week, as the Commodores picked up three more victories while the Tigers won three times in four outings.

Elsewhere, the Tiger girls split two games, and the Mount Abe-VUHS boys’ and Otter Valley boys’ teams each came up short twice.

TIGER BOYS

On May 12 the Tiger boys coasted to a 16-2 victory over visiting Burlington. Owen Lawton sparked the offense with six goals, and Mason Kaufman scored once and assisted three goals. Goalie Jack Rizzo made one save and scored a goal.

On May 13 the Tiger boys eased past visiting St. Albans, 16-6. Kaufmann (four goals), Zach Jette (three goals) and Toby Draper (goal, three assists) led the offense. Rizzo made six saves and added another goal.

On Saturday host Essex snapped the Tiger streak with a 16-3 victory. Sam Bowen (four goals, four assists) and Chris Davis (five goals) were tough on the Tiger D, and Hornet goalie Ben Russell made six saves. Lawton scored twice, while Rizzo made 12 saves for the 6-3 Tigers.

The Tigers bounced back on Monday to edge visiting South Burlington, 8-6, as Rizzo denied 19 Wolf shots on goal. Lawton and Jackson Gillette each scored twice to pace the offence, Kaufmann and Draper notched a goal and an assist apiece, and Cam Stone and Henry Hunsdorfer each found the net.

MUHS improved to 7-3 in Division I heading into a Wednesday game at St. Albans.

COMMODORES

The D-II Commodores improved to 9-1 with a trio of one-sided victories. They were set to face Lamoille on Wednesday before this coming Saturday’s showdown with undefeated first-place Hartford, the only team to defeat VUHS-Mt. Abe this spring. 

On May 12 the Commodores dispatched visiting Harwood, 18-3. Sydney Weber led the attack with four goals; Hannah Kelly, Ryley Olsen and Txuxa Doherty-Konczal each scored three times, and Molly Laurent scored once and set up two goals. In goal, Ashley Tierney (four) and Carley Cook (two) combined for six saves.

On Saturday the Commodores claimed a 15-2 victory at Milton. Weber (five goals), Annika Funke and Olsen (three goals, two assists apiece) led the assault. Tierney (three saves) and Cook (two) stopped most of what came their way.

Visiting U-32 offered more resistance on Monday, but the Commodores still prevailed, 11-5. Weber (three goals), Kelly (two goals, two assists) and Doherty-Konczal (two goals) led the way, and Halle Huizenga, Elena Bronson, Marley Keith and Sophie Davis added a goal each. Tierney backstopped the win with seven stops.

TIGER GIRLS

On Friday visiting Essex (6-2) defeated the Tiger girls for the second time this spring, this time by 11-5.

The home team kept the game within reach in the first half, trailing by 4-1 as Alanna Trudeau scored the first of her two goals and goalie Lydia Deppman made three of her four saves.

Reese Fitzgerald, Hana Doria and Nora Wootten each added a goal for MUHS, while two Hornet goalies combined for 13 saves.

On Tuesday the Tigers kept host Burlington winless by defeating the Seahorses, 12-5. Trudeau pumped in six goals to spark the Tigers, Doria and Sophie Larocque netted two apiece, and Ella Tucker and Wootten tossed in one each. Deppman stopped five shots as the Tigers moved to 4-6.

EAGLES

On Saturday host Harwood defeated the Mount Abe-VUHS boys, 10-3, dropping the Eagles to 2-7. Highlander goalie Addison Dietz made 11 saves. For the Eagles Henry Anderson scored twice and Griffin Paradee once, and goalie Aiden Danyow also stopped 11 shots.

On Tuesday the Eagles had difficulty putting the ball past Montpelier goalie Winslow Monde (11 saves) in another 10-3 setback and dropped to 2-8.

OTTERS

On Friday host D-I Rutland cruised past D-III OV, 17-2. Thomas Politano and David Williams scored second-half goals for the Otters, and goalie Daniel O’Brien made 10 saves. On Monday visiting D-I title contender Burr & Burton breezed past the Otters, 22-1. OV fell to 1-7.
