Storm causes power outages in Addison County

MIDDLEBURY — Two separate power outages late on Wednesday afternoon struck downtown Middlebury and a stretch of Route 116 stretching from East Middlebury to the southeast corner of New Haven.

Both outages occurred during a late-afternoon lightning storm, although Green Mountain Power’s outage center on its website did not attribute the outages to any specific causes.

According to GMP’s website the downtown Middlebury outage affected 1,614 customers. It was reported at 3:44 p.m., and GMP anticipated its workers would have service restored in about three hours.

The affected area included both sides of Route 7, starting south of the village and reaching its northern end. It included most of the residential neighborhoods east of Otter Creek and stretched east toward Foote Street.

The other outage was reported three minutes after the first one, and GMP estimated it would take about four hours to restore power. It included homes and businesses on both sides of Route 116 and Munger Street and stopped short of River Road in New Haven.

Affected were 511 customers in Middlebury and 40 in New Haven, according to GMP’s website.

Some residents in Middlebury village said their power wasn’t restored until 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.
