Tiger girls lacrosse likely to face MAU
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team earned the No. 5 seed for the Division I playoffs and was set to take on No. 12 Essex (5-10) on Wednesday after the deadline for this edition of the Independent.
That game was postponed early on Tuesday afternoon when the forecast showed nearly a 100 percent chance of thunderstorms during the originally scheduled Tuesday game, which was set to start at 5:30 p.m.
Assuming the Tigers, who defeated the Hornets twice handily in the regular season, prevailed on Wednesday, they advanced to a Friday quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. The results will be posted on www.addisonindependent.com on Thursday morning.
That quarterfinal will almost certainly be against No. 4 Mount Anthony (11-4), which faced No. 13 Champlain Valley (1-12). The Tigers and Patriots did not meet this spring.
If the Tigers prevail in that matchup, their likely semifinal opponent on June 11 would be No. 1 Burr & Burton (13-2). The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs at home, 13-12, but lost in Manchester, 13-8.
The D-I final will be played at a time to be announced at Castleton State College. The Tigers, who last won the title in 2008, have made three straight appearances in the final, losing each time to South Burlington, the No. 6 seed this season.
