Soccer teams come up short on Tuesday

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school soccer action, all on Tuesday, the Vergennes boys dropped a home game, while the Otter girls and Middlebury boys lost road contests.
The Mount Abraham boys also played their home opener; see story, Page 1B.
VUHS BOYS
Undefeated Rice, which owns a win over Division I power Champlain Valley, nipped the Commodore boys, 2-1, by scoring twice in the second half.
Jake Dombek’s first-half penalty kick gave VUHS (0-2) the lead, but Jordain Williams converted a penalty kick to tie the game before Hayden Kjelleran tallied the game-winner. Rice goalie Leland Gazo stopped seven shots, while VUHS goalie Dylan Raymond made 11 saves, including stopping a penalty kick.
OV GIRLS
Host Woodstock defeated the OV girls, 3-0, dropping the Otters to 0-3. The 3-0 Wasps scored twice in the first half, while OV starting goalie Gabriela Poalino made eight saves, and once in the second half, when Nora Enright stepped into the net and made four stops. Coach Rick Hedding said the Otters put four shots on the Wasp goal, and that defenders Shana Houle andJillian Flanders played well.
TIGER BOYS
Host Stowe improved to 3-1 with a 5-0 victory over MUHS, which dropped to 0-3 and remained in search of its first goal of the fall. Carl LaBarbera scored twice for Stowe, and Raider goalie Mark Infante stopped one shot. Tiger goalie Wilder Perera made 14 saves.
