HANCOCK — A paving project on Route 125 in Hancock going over the Middlebury Gap will cause disruptions in traffic patterns for the weeks of July 4 and July 11.
The project will begin at mile marker .767 and continue for 6.5 miles. The road will be paved and reclaimed, and elevation deficiencies will be corrected. There will also be guardrail and drainage improvements.
The paving will begin in the village of Hancock then proceed up the gap west toward Ripton. The east side will be paved first. Residents of Hancock will be allowed to come and go, but are encouraged to stay put until the crew allows traffic on the newly paved surface.
The schedule is weather-dependent and will begin sometime between July 5 and July 11. Traffic will alternate in one lane around the project.
Due to the loose gravel of the road in its current condition, cyclists are strongly encouraged to find an alternate route. Officials warn drivers to drive the speed limit and maintain a safe following distance to avoid punctured tires and damaged windshields.
