Salisbury voters decide to keep gun ordinance

SALISBURY — Salisbury residents on Tuesday voted 92 to 61 against repealing a new firearms ordinance intended to promote safety in the most populous parts of town.
The new law, unanimously endorsed by the Salisbury selectboard back on April 26 — prohibits “the firing or discharge of a firearm … within a safety zone of 200 feet from any residence, building or camper in the High Density Residential/Village Center (HDR district), or the Lakeshore District Areas.”
The board adopted the ordinance after receiving complaints from some residents concerned about people using firearms in close proximity to their homes.
But some residents circulated a petition that successfully triggered Tuesday’s Australian ballot vote on whether to repeal the new law.
Nutmeg Lane resident Allyson Manning was one of those who advocated for the new ordinance.
“The wisdom of good common sense and safety has prevailed,” she said in an emailed response about the vote outcome.
