Tiger field hockey earns first victory
EAST MONTPELIER — The Middlebury Union High School field hockey team picked a good time for its first win of the season, knocking off host No. 8 U-32, 3-1, on Tuesday in the first round of the Division II playoffs.
The No. 9 Tigers improved to 1-12-1 and advanced to a Friday quarterfinal at top-seeded Bellows Falls (14-0). The Terriers won the D-III title a year ago and have excelled in D-II this season.
On Tuesday Phoebe Smith led the Tiger attack with a pair of goals, both assisted by Naoko Maruyama, and Blair Stone also scored. Blair Stone also scored for the Tigers, who lost at home to U-32 by 6-2 earlier this fall.
Eva Jessup scored for U-32, which finished the season at 2-13.
