South Dakota resident wins Morgan horse raffle

MIDDLEBURY — Thomas Mikrut of Prairie Winds Morgans in South Dakota was the big winner of the 2017 University of Vermont Morgan Foal Raffle. Mikrut becomes the proud owner of UVM Zephyr, a beautiful young Morgan whose value had been estimated at $3,000 (for tax purposes).
Prairie Winds plans to add UVM Zephyr to its breeding program, according to UVM Morgan Horse Farm Operations Coordinator Margot Smithson. Prairie Winds currently has 26 Morgans.
The UVM Morgan Horse Farm sold around 8,000 tickets for the raffle, which has become an annual fundraiser. Participants were able to buy a single ticket for $2 and seven for $10. The drawing was held on Oct. 31.
