BRISTOL — The 5-Town Friends of the Arts will be honoring Deborah Lubar and Marianne Lust at an event at Holley Hall in Bristol Sunday, March 18, from 1-3 p.m.
Marianne and Deborah, both Lincoln residents, will be celebrated for their decades of performances, nurturing the arts and artists, and keeping the ancient art of storytelling alive in this neck of the woods. There will be music, readings, testimonials, and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.
For the past 35 years, Marianne Lust has written, directed, and produced “Night Fires,” an annual theatrical production celebrating the winter solstice with music from around the world, dancing, and stories about love, nature, peace, and journeys through the darkness into the light. Formerly “Night Fires” was performed at venues throughout northern Vermont, concluding in Middlebury or Bristol. Most recently, it has been staged solely at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater.
Until five years ago, “Marrowbone,” an annual celebration of story and storytelling, also directed by Marianne, was performed at the peak of autumnal color in the Lincoln woods. Numerous local folk have told stories, sung, or danced in these original productions, some beginning as children under Marianne’s direction and now performing on stages around the world.
Deborah Lubar is a monologuist, actor, author, playwright, and storyteller who, in addition to performing in “Marrowbone” and “Night Fires,” has toured widely to critical acclaim with original theatrical performances about women who endure the turmoil, realities, and upheavals of the world with courage, strength, and open hearts. She has taught theater at Oberlin, Hampshire, and Smith colleges and trained dramatic writers and performers, locally and across the United States.
