Letter to the editor: Climate referenda deserve support

When it comes to responding to the climate destabilizing predicament we have created, some people believe that what we do here in Middlebury is of little consequence. We are just one small town in a small state and what we do does not appear to amount to anything significant. This belief is misleading and incomplete as it ignores the power of cumulative impacts.
When one person, or even the entire population of one small town burns fossil fuels in an internal combustion engine, the GHG emissions and their impact is insignificant. But when you have the cumulative impact of billions of people around the world all creating this small amount of seemingly insignificant harm, collectively it amounts to damage of global proportions. This same power of cumulative impacts will be required for us to reverse climate destabilization and prevent this threat to organized human existence. Please vote YES for the climate resolutions that will appear on Middlebury’s town meeting ballot as articles 9 and 10 on March 5.
Ross Conrad, Chair
Middlebury Energy Committee
