Eagle girls’ basketball advances in D-II playoffs
ADDISON COUNTY — The top-seeded Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team opened its Division II title defense by topping visiting No. 16 Woodstock on Tuesday, when also No. 13 Otter Valley fell at No. 4 Lake Region.
Vergennes (9-11) received the No. 12 seed in D-II and was set to visit No. 5 Randolph on Wednesday after the deadline for the sports section. If the Commodores upset the Ghosts they will travel to meet Lake Region on Friday at 7 p.m.
The area’s only D-I team, Middlebury, did not qualify for the D-I postseason.
EAGLES
The 19-2 Eagles had little trouble with Woodstock in a 40-8 victory. Mount Abe senior Jalen Cook led all scorers with 18 points, and junior Chloe Johnston chipped in eight points, five rebounds and 10 steals against the 8-13 Wasps.
The Eagles will next take on No. 8 U-32 (11-10) at 7 p.m. on Friday in Bristol. The winner of that game will play at 8:45 p.m. on Monday in Barre. U-32 defeated Mount Abe, 29-27, in the team’s opener on Dec. 13, but the Eagles won a Dec. 29 rematch in Bristol, 48-22.
OTTERS
OV gave No. 4 Lake Region a good game in a 54-44 setback. Tia Martinez (17 points) and Robin Nelson (16) led the 17-4 Rangers. Junior forward Livia Bernhardt tossed in 20 as a young OV team finished 6-15.
