UPDATED NEW HAVEN — A construction zone flagger died at University of Vermont Medical Center after sustaining what Vermont State Police describe as “severe facial and internal injuries” when hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Routes 7 and 17 at New Haven Junction on Friday, Aug. 23.
James P. Alger, 38, of Barre died overnight, state police reported on Saturday.
VSP cited the driver — Jennifer Bergevin, 49, of Middlebury — for driving under the influence of drugs and grossly negligent operation with serious bodily injury resulting.
Police said they were called to the scene at around 8:13 a.m. by a report of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, police learned Alger had been struck by a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Bergevin.
The VSP preliminary investigation indicated Alger was working as a flagger in the  railroad crossing construction zone at the junction when he was struck by Bergevin’s vehicle, which was traveling north on Route 7 at the posted limit of 30 miles per hour.
 Alger was stabilized at the scene by first responders from Vergennes Area Rescue Services and Middlebury Regional EMS.  The seriousness of his injuries required him to be airlifted from Porter Hospital to UVM Medical Center by DART Helicopter, police said. Police reported Alger’s passing on Saturday morning.
State police took Bergevin to the New Haven barracks for processing.
This crash remains under investigation.
