Great Art Wednesdays: ‘Leonardo: The Works’

MIDDLEBURY — Town Hall Theater is marking the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death with a limited screening of “Leonardo: The Works,” directed by Phil Grabsky on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m.
Leonardo da Vinci is acclaimed as the world’s favorite artist. Many TV shows and feature films have showcased this extraordinary genius but often not examined closely enough is the most crucial element of all: his art. Leonardo’s peerless paintings and drawings will be the focus of “Leonardo: The Works,” as the film presents every single attributed painting, in Ultra HD quality, never seen before on the big screen. Key works include “The Mona Lisa,” “The Last Supper,” “Lady with an Ermine,” “Ginevra de’ Benci,” “Madonna Litta,” “Virgin of the Rocks” and more than a dozen others.
This film also looks afresh at Leonardo’s life — his inventiveness, his sculptural skills, his military foresight and his ability to navigate the treacherous politics of the day — through the prism of his art. To be released on the 500th anniversary of his death, this is the definitive film about Leonardo — the first to truly tell the whole story.
Great Art Wednesdays is a series of matinee film screenings on Wednesday mornings featuring full-length documentaries on the big screen about history’s greatest artists and artworks — from the past to the present day. This year’s series includes Alexander Calder, Leonardo Da Vinci, Al Hirschfeld, Tintoretto, Louise Bourgeoise, The Prado Museum, Easter in Art, Lucian Freud and Frida Kahlo.
Wednesday’s film will screen at 11 a.m. Fun time is 85 minutes. Tickets are $13/$8 and may be purchased by calling (802) 382-9222, at the box office or online at townhalltheater.org.
