In boys’ hoop: Tigers top Eagles; OV splits a pair

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury edged visiting Mount Abraham to highlight local boys’ basketball action last week. In other games Vergennes came up short at home, while Otter Valley split two games at a neutral-site tournament.
Monday games were played after the early deadline for this holiday edition of the Independent.
TIGERS EDGE EAGLES
On Dec. 23 the host Tigers staved off a tough challenge from the Eagles, 60-58. The Tigers led by as many as 18 in the third period before full-court pressure and scoring from Eagles Henry Cogswell (23 points) and Liam Kelliher (17 points) gave Mount Abe a 55-54 lead in the final minute.
At that point Tiger Tim Goettelmann stole the ball and converted a three-point play to give MUHS a two-point lead the Tigers would not surrender again.
Tyler Buxton (16 points) and Max Alberts (15) paced the MUHS attack, and Coach John Howe said Wesley Hirdler grabbed big rebounds and made key blocks.
On Dec. 27 visiting Randolph avenged an earlier loss to the Eagles with a 58-34 victory. The Ghosts took an early lead and never trailed. Levi West scored 14 to lead three Ghosts in double figures. Kelliher tossed in 12 to pace the 2-3 Eagles.
The Tigers were set to host the Otters on Monday, but that game was postponed. The Eagles had a date at Mill River on Monday; no announcement was made on that game before deadline.
COMMODORES
On Dec. 23 visiting U-32 jumped on the Commodores for a 20-2 lead and held on for a 58-43 victory. Carter Pelzel led three Raiders in double figures with 15 points. Ben Curtis, Luke Bergmans and Kevin Jackson each scored seven for VUHS.
The Commodores were set to visit Harwood on Monday; again, it was uncertain if that game would be played a press time.
OTTERS
Undefeated Mill River coasted past OV, 78-32, at Hartford on Dec. 23 in the opening round of the East-West Challenge tournament. Aidan Botti paced MRU with 18 points, 16 in the first half. Parker Todd led OV with eight points.
In the Dec. 27 consolation game, the Otters topped Woodstock in double overtime, 67-64, after rallying from a nine-point second-half deficit. Todd’s buzzer-beating three sealed the win for OV (2-2) in the second OT. Todd paced the Otters with 17 points, followed by Alex Philo and Julian Lopez with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Woodstock’s Harrison Morse scored 36 points.
