BRISTOL — Attorney General T. J. Donovan announced Tuesday that his office will not prosecute two Vermont State Police troopers who shot an armed Bristol man in his driveway in December.
The man, 28-year-old Greg West, did not die.
“Based on the facts and circumstances, and consistent with Vermont law, the Attorney General’s Office has concluded that the actions of the officers were justified,” Donovan said in a press release.
On the evening of Dec. 3 Troopers Robert Helm and Matthew Hood, along with an officer with the Bristol Police Department, were called to a domestic disturbance at a home on Lower Notch Road in Bristol.
West, whom a relative had described to police as “intoxicated” and “threatening,” was standing in the driveway, armed with a shotgun, according to the VSP.
Police tried to de-escalate the situation, but West ultimately refused to drop the shotgun, and the two troopers fire multiple rounds from their patrol rifles, striking West multiple times, police said in a press release at the time.
West was immediately transported to UVM Medical Center to be treated for his wounds.
Donovan said Tuesday that West is currently facing criminal charges for allegations closely related to this incident.
