Letter to the editor: Longtime Republican sees party straying rightward

As a member of the vast Bingham family tree whereupon whom one member’s Michigan farm the Republican Party was founded after there were Whigs in Wisconsin and as a lifetime Republican who hasn’t voted that way since Reagan, I will say that I perceive the current Republican Party has strayed way too far to the right and seems to be more about money, power and dishonesty.
Whatever happened to Republicans like we elected from Vermont when we had moderates like U.S. Senators Aiken Stafford and Jeffords, whom I all knew as a child?
I still remember Jim Jeffords coming to one of my flag football games when I was in junior high school and my father, educator Dr. Kenneth Severson, was involved in the local Republican Party.
We need more Republicans like Aiken, Jeffords and Stafford, who exemplified what the Republican Party should be more like.
I won’t comment upon whom I’ll be casting my ballot for this November but I will say I’ll be extremely careful and selective.
