Editorial: Mixed messages in Gov.’s race

Angelo Lynn

The unresolved story of Amanda Janoo’s extraordinary run for governor is full of question marks. What now? Will the movement that excited over 1,900 volunteers to campaign on her behalf, and attracted over 9,000 donors to contribute more than a million dollars to her fade away? Or can this movement that attracted 141,500 voters find a life hereafter?

If so, what’s Janoo’s role? Vermonters loved her because they were drawn to her vision for Vermont, but can she add structure and details so a firmer picture of reality would convince doubters her ideas would successfully address some of Vermont’s toughest problems?

As for Gov. Phil Scott’s trajectory over the next two years what will he learn from this election? In his uninspired victory speech, he lamented Democrats again won a supermajority and seemed to already dread the concessions the Legislature will ask of him. Will he sharpen his veto pen and define affordability as meager tax cuts that benefit those at the top the most, or will he and the Legislature adjust to the mixed messages voters sent?
