Barbara M. Farr, 98, of South Starksboro

SOUTH STARKSBORO — Barbara M. Farr, 98, died on Monday, May 1, 2023, at her home in South Starksboro. She was born on Jan. 30, 1925, to Ralph and Ada (Merrill) Morrill.

In 1937, her father was killed in a car accident at the Lord’s Prayer Rock on Christmas Eve. Less than two years later, Barb was supporting herself by working on various local farms milking cows and doing fieldwork, including driving horses and tractors.

A few years later, her uncle, Fred Reynolds, learned of her circumstances and invited her to live with his family on their farm in Lincoln. She accepted and subsequently considered the farm her home.

Barb met Maynard at a Christian Endeavor meeting at Burnham Hall in Lincoln. They were married in August, 1948, and later moved to South Starksboro, where they built a home and raised their family.

She was a skilled craftsperson and especially enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, chair caning, gardening, and quilting. She gifted dozens of family members and friends with beautiful quilts and afghans. She loved to read and developed a wide range of interests supported by reading several books each week. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles.

Barb loved to dance and recalled dancing to the music of various live bands on the Friday night summertime cruises of the Ticonderoga (now at Shelburne Museum) on Lake Champlain.

Barb and Maynard maintained numerous lifelong friendships. Their home was a hub for evening visiting, coffee, playing cards, and conversation. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling to various events and destinations throughout the northeast with many of those same friends.

Barb met one of her friends, Helen Phelps Lathrop, on Helen’s first day of school in first grade. Their friendship endured for nearly 90 years until Helen’s passing last December.

Barb is survived by her daughters, Kathy Bushey and Maxx Farr, and her son, Terry Farr, all of Vermont; four grandchildren, Brian Bushey Sr. of South Carolina, Robin (Mike) Murray of Kansas, and Kevin Bushey and Sophia Farr of Vermont; six great-grandchildren, Brain (Kelly) Bushey Jr. of Japan; Alyson Bushey of South Carolina; Cody and Cassidy Bushey and Laryn and Logan Murray, all of Kansas; Four great-great-grandchildren, Karmyn, Dale, Mikayla, and Zyire; her brother, Earl (Delia) of Vermont and a very special niece, Linda Squires Colburn of New Hampshire, as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Maynard (2008), her son-in-law, Dale Bushey (2009) and her siblings, Grace Squires, Wynona Stetson, and Joseph Morrill.

At her request, private graveside services will be held at Maple Cemetery in Lincoln, Vermont. ◊
