Letter to the editor: Anti-racism class would benefit all

I just read the Independent’s article about the “racial incident” in Bristol — twice. I certainly agree that something not only needs to be done, but must be done. I’m not really very aware of who is on the school board and what action they have taken; or, what the Community Engagement Committee does. I’m sure everyone is working toward a safer environment in our schools.

But, the thing that struck me as odd was the suggestion made by Elissa Cobb that every “white” student be required to take an anti-racism class in order to graduate. Why only the white students? Clearly racism happens in other circumstances than just whites against people of color. Why would you exclude anyone from such a class? I think that if such a class is created it should be mandatory for all students. Isn’t that what we are working toward, equal opportunity for everyone?
