While both of our political parties are rife with flaws (both at the federal level, for example, are too beholden to the wealthy and corporate interests) only one of them has totally lost its moral compass. Republicans are the party of Trump.
One party stands against the rule of law and for warrantless abductions and killing citizens with zero accountability. It has made the Department of Justice into a legal reprisal unit and started an illegal war in the middle east that it has no idea how to end.
One party has made Congress, The People’s House, subservient to the vindictive whim of the would-be autocrat in the White House. It has totally relinquished the power of the purse and its fact-finding and investigative functions as outlined in the Constitution.
One party coddles our enemies and vilifies our friends and allies. Putin, murderer and sworn enemy of Democracy, is the President’s special friend while our NATO allies and even Canada are mocked and threatened.
One party has taken corruption and self-dealing to Olympian levels, brazenly enriching its leaders with pay-to-play crypto schemes and selling inside information to the highest bidder.
One party, with its outright racism and assault on civil liberties, seeks to undo over a century of progress toward “a more perfect union,” and lead us backwards into a new Jim Crow era.
One party seeks to undermine our capacity to conduct elections and has shown itself willing to thwart the peaceful transfer of power by violent means.
One party has proclaimed itself the enemy of a free press and banished reporters from the White House and made the Pentagon a “reporter-free” zone. It knows a democratic republic cannot long exist without the indispensable “Fourth Estate.”
This party has surrendered itself to the glorification and defense of its despicable leader, and has given up any pretense to higher ideals, let alone serving the interests of citizens and a livable future. Sorry, Republicans, though many of you no doubt mean well, your brand is rotten, rotten to the core.
