Gordon Lawrence Noble, 89, of South Lincoln
SOUTH LINCOLN — Gordon Lawrence Noble of South Lincoln, Vt., passed away Dec. 24, 2025.
Gordon was born June 17, 1936, in Brandon, Vermont, to parents Lester and Gladys Noble. He was a proud Vermonter whose life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and service to others.
Gordon was preceded in death by brother, Allen Noble, and sister Carol Steady. He is survived by his siblings, Edith Noble of Leominster, Mass., Robert Noble of Bristol, Vt., and Donald Noble of Orlando, Fla.
He was devoted to his dear dogs, Penny, Treva, and Buffy and caretaker and pal to many others, including Amos, Zoe, Indy and Sasha. He was best friend to Wolf.
Gordon attended South Lincoln and West Hill School, Lincoln, Vt. He served in the U. S. Army in Germany as a machine gun crewman. On foot patrol through frigid winters, he carried out his responsibilities with distinction, earning an honorable discharge.
Gordon spent his life, working on the family farm in South Lincoln, tending cows, logging, mowing, sugaring, haying, fixing equipment and maintaining roads and trails. He maintained the land with dedication and care.
He was a friend to the animals that lived on the land. Filling and removing multiple feeders each dawn and evening, his hill was a favorite spot for local and migrating birds, and the many other critters who came for the leftovers. Many generations of fox pups were born in his shed, knowing he maintained it for them as a safe space. They would sit in the field and watch him work, and proudly bring their pups out to show in the spring.
Professionally, Gordon worked as a semi-truck driver for Cartmell Sales and Service in Middlebury, Vt., continued on when it became Green Mountain Tractor, and then Champlain Valley Equipment. Gordon’s expertise in hauling, picking up and delivering farm equipment throughout Vermont and the Northeast was highly valued, earning him a reputation for safety, skill, and problem-solving. After retirement, Gordon continued to return each spring and summer, to assist in the yard and share his expertise.
Gordon was always helping neighbors and the community — pulling vehicles and delivery trucks from ditches and mud, plowing neighbors’ driveways, fixing roads, cutting, stacking and delivering firewood for neighbors in need, helping with haying and chores, and teaching others about how to care for their land.
He took great pride and care maintaining his land and equipment. He could be seen on the hottest summer days, mowing his fields with meticulous care and dedication. There was not a stray branch or misplaced rock ever to be found on his trails or lawn.
A celebration of Gordon’s life will take place May 17, at 2 p.m., at the Lincoln Library, Lincoln, Vt. Feel free to bring your stories, memories, pictures of Gordon and the farm, and snacks to share.
There will be a graveside service for anyone who would like to attend, Monday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln, Vt.◊
