ROBERT J. GARTHAFFNER

ORWELL — Robert J. Garthaffner, 74, of Orwell, passed away on Wednesday evening, Nov. 26, 2025. Born on Aug. 30, 1951, he spent his life dedicated to God, family, and service to others.

Bob (Garth) was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served honorably for four years during and after the Vietnam War. It was during that time that he met his wife, Sandra Garthaffner (Giard) of Bridport. This union brought with it three young kids and the responsibility of being a father, a role he embraced that ultimately led to the children’s adoption.

After purchasing their home in Orwell, Bob became well known in the community, where he was always reaching out to neighbors, those seen at local stores, restaurants, and churches, striking up conversations and offering help where it was needed. His favorite pastime was hunting whitetail deer, and over the years, he earned many trophies for deer in New York, Vermont, and Virginia. He was always ready and willing to discuss hunting, guns, ammunition, and the rules governing the harvest of Vermont wildlife.

Most importantly, there was his love for God and his firm belief in Jesus Christ. Over the years, his faith grew, and he was always ready to share his testimony or scripture verses with those who were interested in listening. He held the position of Deacon at several local churches throughout his journey and was often seen working and volunteering there.

Robert was predeceased by his father, Gerard Martin Garthaffner; mother, Agnes Rose (Cetner) Garthaffner; his sister Mary Rita Adams, and brothers, Gerard and Peter Garthaffner.

Robert is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra (Giard) Garthaffner of Orwell; his daughter Melissa (Lynn) Harvey of Cleveland, N.Y.; his daughter Shelley (Chris) Lewis of Shoreham; his son Todd (Monica) Garthaffner of Addison; his brother Martin (Linda) Garthaffner of Virginia; his brother William Garthaffner of New York; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Middlebury Regional EMS. ◊
