ALLEN RICHARD ALGER

ORWELL — Allen Richard Alger, age 81, passed peacefully Sept. 6, 2025, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

Allen was born in Colchester on Jan. 16, 1944, son of Eldon and Ardella (Machia) Alger. He grew up in the Sudbury and Brandon area, where he received his education. He began his working years as a woodsman. He later worked for Champlain Construction as a heavy equipment operator and on the highway department for the town of Orwell for many years. He served as a member of the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department, volunteering for over 50 years. He was the Forest Fire Warden since 1981.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and good music, but the greatest joy of his life was spending time with his family and friends. He and Christy hosted many picnics, holidays, and spaghetti dinners at their home.

He is survived by the mother of their children, Christy (Desjadon) Alger; children Tonya Kessler (Franklyn), Allen M. Alger (Cathy), and Tiffany Stowe (Thaddeus); his grandchildren Emily, Benjamin, Caitlyn, Bethany, Madelyn and Dylan; great-grandchildren Finnley, Ila Mae, and Tucker; a brother, Mark Alger (Bert); and dear friends Louis Hall and Ed Babbitt. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Leonard Alger, and two sisters, Betty Alger and Nancy Stevens.

A memorial service, directed by members of the Addison County Firefighters Association and Orwell Fire Department, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at noon, at the Orwell Fire House. A celebration of life will follow until 3 p.m.
