Seven MUHS alums plus one superfan tapped for hall of fame

The MHS/MUHS Alumni Association welcomes eight inductees this year to recognize their commitment and dedication for service to community after their years at Middlebury High School or Middlebury Union High School. Full bio’s and nominations letters will be presented at the Hall of Fame Dinner on Sept. 27. Details on the event will appear in the Addison Independent. 

PAT SHAW class of 1983

Pat played football and wrestled while in high school. In Pat’s senior year he finished 3rd in the State Wrestling Championships and went to the New England tournament. Pat enthusiastically supported the basketball team and their state championship in 1983

Since graduating in 1983, Pat has coached flag football and wrestling at MUHS and Mt. Abraham, and alongside his wife, Lisa, served as the heart of the MUHS lacrosse snack committee, hosting all home games and the annual New England lacrosse tournament. 

Pat’s dedication to emergency services spans over four decades. He joined the Middlebury Fire Department at age 16, later serving 18 years with the New Haven Fire Department, rising to the rank of captain. Today, he is the assistant chief of the Middlebury Fire Dept. His leadership and courage were evident during major events such as the blizzard of 1993, the 1998 ice storm, and the 2007 Middlebury train derailment, where his emergency management expertise helped secure the scene and protect the community. Pat’s dedication to his community is recognized by his Hall of Fame induction. 

KATE PERINE LIVESAY class of 1998

While at MUHS, Kate excelled in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. Both her field hockey and lacrosse teams won state championships in her senior year. She was named Vermont lacrosse player of the year. Off the field, she served as senior class president.

After high school, Kate attended Middlebury College, where played both field hockey and lacrosse. Her lacrosse team won two NCAA championships. 

After college, she began her lacrosse coaching career at Trinity College taking her team to the school’s first ever national championship in 2012. In 2015, she returned to Middlebury College, accepting head coaching duties in 2016. She has coached her lacrosse team to six NCAA championships. Kate has been recognized as national coach of the year seven times. 

Kate has also spent countless hours coaching youth sports, not only in lacrosse but also in soccer and basketball. She is also an involved member of the local Congregational Church. She has stressed the importance of community involvement to her Middlebury College lacrosse players through participation in the church’s Friday night community dinners. 

AARON HARRIS class of 1988

Aaron was the co-captain of the 1988 Tiger football team and received All State Vermont and All-American awards. After graduating, Aaron had an exceptional football and academic career at Princeton. While at Princeton he was awarded the coveted “Pink Baker” Trophy for outstanding defensive player. He was twice a first team All-Ivy League linebacker and was captain of Princeton’s ’92-’93 Ivy League Champion team. While at Princeton he broke the single game (19) and full season (148) tackling records. 

After college he continued to serve his community as a mentor and youth football coach. Aaron coached MUHS varsity and youth football programs and is assisting the South Burlington and Chittenden County communities to help develop their youth football programs. He is helping to develop a padded flag football program in South Burlington, where the goals are to foster athleticism, teamwork and sportsmanship in a safe and inclusive environment for our students. Off the field, Aaron has supported local businesses investing and being operationally involved with several small, Vermont-based food companies, notably Vermont Smoke and Cure. 

MARTIN GUIGUI class of 1978

Martin was a multi-talented student who excelled in the arts. He acted in school plays, wrote and participated in the variety shows, was a member of the school mime group, played violin in the Green Mountain Fiddlers, and played in the band “Speed Limit,” which was made up of MUHS students. Martin created a local radio show hosted by MUHS students called “Tigers Mouth.” He also enjoyed himself and excelled on the basketball court. 

Martin went on to study film and music at Hofstra University and was part of the Burlington music scene jamming with Phish, Blues Traveler, eventually forming his own Martin Guigui Band. Martin enjoyed a career as a musician and filmmaker and has worked with icons and stars of the entertainment industry including the likes of Robin Williams, ZZ Top, Lady Gaga and many more.

For Martin, making a difference and giving back is always at the forefront, whether it is mentoring young artists, or organizing and producing annual fundraising benefit concerts or TV specials to raise awareness and funds for mental wellness causes, first responders, veterans and music education. 

AMY HOLBROOK class of 1981

Amy was a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), serving as secretary of the Middlebury chapter and treasurer of the West Central District. Amy received the Green Mountain Degree and the Star State Agri-businessman Award.

After high school, Amy got more involved with her hometown of Salisbury. She served as a member of the Salisbury Fireman’s Auxiliary, was a coordinator for Environmental Learning for the Future, and was a key member in creating the Friends of Salisbury Community School organization. 

Amy became involved in an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society called Relay for Life (RLF). She was a member of the Ova Chicks Relay for Life team serving as team captain since 2010. During Relay 2005 Amy received one of two Spirit Awards that were given. Amy was selected as the closing speaker for Relay 2012 and was also honored with the 2012 spirit award! Amy put her heart and soul into RLF, leading a dedicated team who were respected and recognized for being the highest fundraiser team for most years. 

LUKE HOTTE class of 1965

In high school Luke was the state-record holder and state champion in the shot put. He played football on Hubie Wagner’s first team. Coach Wagner summed up Luke by saying, “Luke was the hardest working, nicest guy that you would ever want to coach.”

Luke joined the Middlebury College coaching cohort as a volunteer in 1986 and was hired in 1994 as an assistant coach. He played a pivotal role in shaping generations of student-athletes, fostering both their athletic and personal growth. For years, Luke’s only received passes for golf or skiing at the college as compensation for his coaching, a testament to the purity in his love for coaching.

“Luke was one of the top throws coaches in the country, but he was a humble good friend to all. Practices were always something I looked forward to every day,” one student athlete said. “He was probably one of the best coaches I’ve ever had in my life… I owe a lot in terms of the thrower that I became because of him, and also the man I am today is a huge part because of him.”

LARRY VOLKERT class of 1963

In high school Larry demonstrated leadership skills as an active member in Drama Club, the Tigers Tale, the Quatrain, and a delegate of Student Council. Larry’s high school years laid the foundation for a lifetime of service to his community and country. After graduation Larry served in the army and was deployed to Vietnam. His service and sacrifice were honored with a Purple Heart.

Larry is a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) serving as Commander and other elected positions. Larry’s work with the VFW also includes chairing major projects like the Soldiers Monument and Cannon Park. Larry was also heavily involved with the Memorial Day ceremonies including Parade Chairman for 24 years.

Larry’s volunteer involvement includes 42 years with the fire department and 11 years on the Community Players Board. Throughout his career of community service, Larry has been recognized for his contributions including being recognized for his contributions, including being awarded the John McCardell Citizens Medal in 2003. He is a true example of dedication, leadership and service.

CHIP MALCOM Honorary Hall of Fame Member

James Chip Malcom moved to Middlebury in 1975 and quickly learned that Friday Night Football was a place to meet friends. The tradition of following the team has lasted 51 years. His son Jed is now coaching the team. In 1985, Chip was elected to the school board and served from 1995 until 2000. The school was in danger of losing its accreditation for substandard facilities. After several failed bond votes, Chip helped bring the community together and the junior high was moved to a new middle school building, and the junior high wing of MUHS became a science wing. 

In Chip’s day and night job as an obstetrician/gynecologist at Porter Hospital he delivered more than 6,000 babies to Addison County. In 2016 he joined the (now) ACSD School Board and served until March 2025. This time saw great change as the International Baccalaureate program was instituted. Chip is also an active member of the Opera Company of Middlebury serving as its president. Chip understands and has represented the needs of many types of student learners and the importance of all extracurricular activities.
